Profile (2021, D: Timur Bekmambetov) S: Valene Kane

In Theaters May 14.

PROFILE follows an undercover British journalist (Valene Kane) in her quest to bait and expose a terrorist recruiter through social media, while trying not to be sucked in by her recruiter and lured into becoming a militant extremist herself.

The unconventional thriller plays out entirely on a computer screen in the Screenlife format, pioneered by Bekmambetov.

Directed by Timur Bekmambetov

This first screened at festivals back in 2018 and only recently got distribution.

Should hit PVOD three weeks after release.

If the goal of this movie was for me to want the reporter to get killed by the terrorists because of how stupid she was acting then it was successful.

“pioneered by Bekmambetov”…? I can see why it’s rolling out on PVOD. I’ll catch it on cable sometime.

Wow, and here I thought the trailer looked really good. I'm a fan of Timur but his career hit a wall when he decided to do that atrocious Ben-Hur remake that no one asked for. I also didn't know that this was in the can since 2018.

I love him when he’s on top of his game, which for me peaked at Nightwatch/Daywatch, Wanted, and even Abe Lincoln Hunting Vamps. But everything else he’s done is really not good at all. This looks like it’s part of that pile.

His last good film for me was Abe Lincoln. Wanted was also awesome. But yeah, Nightwatch/Daywatch are classics, IMO. He also produced a few Russian flicks like Black Lightning, etc. Just looked it up but there's now 6 novels in the Nightwatch series. He could go back to the well.

I just got back from seeing this. It's shot entirely on Facetime and Skype, if you weren't already sick and tired of content filmed that way.

It had some suspenseful elements, but the character "Amy" was so dumb. Made some really stupid mistakes and nearly got herself in deep shit with the terrorist she was trying to get info from and seduce.

The part that made me roll my eyes was near the end when:

Spoiler:

She flashed her airline ticket with her real name in front of the computer screen when she got into a fight with Bilel (the terrorist) to prove her loyalty to him.

It's watchable, but I can't recommend it. The main character is so unlikeable and unsympathetic.

I was surprised to see that Christine Adams (Lynn from Black Lightning) is British. I honestly had no idea.
