Movie theater subscription programs - What are you going to do with them now?
Talking about AMC A-List, Regal Unlimited, Cinemark, Alamo Draft House and such.
What are you going to do with them? 2020 was a complete bust and the theaters put them on pause. However, lots of states have reopened theaters and AMC from what I recall will reactivate all subscriptions this June or July. So are you going to keep it and reactivate it? Keep it on pause as long as possible? Cancel because it's no longer worth the expense? Or are you just going to cancel and hold out until 2022 because the remainder of the year doesn't look good enough to keep it?
With vaccinations going on strong in many states, lots of theaters have reopened. LA is now at 50% capacity and NY just got increased to 33%
I know some of you are still nervous and paranoid about being around strangers. So maybe going to a theater right now is not right at the moment with your personal health concerns or maybe seeing a movie wearing a mask just doesn't work for you. Not going to judge you or talk down. It's your choice.
I had A-List and was a huge user and supporter of it, but I ended up cancelling last September when the studios basically pulled all the big releases. AMC did not put me on the 6 month ban. I still have the option to re-subscribe anytime. So technically I'm on pause at the moment. I just don't know when or if it's even worth the expense right now. I might be better off just paying for the big movies I want to see out of pocket. I might consider reactivating in June in time for Fast and Furious 9.

I was about to do the Alamo one right before the pandemic. But I think my theater-going will be a lot less going forward (turns out I didn’t miss it that much) so it’s not worth it anymore. I’ll probably just see the Marvel movies in theaters and that’s it.

I reactivated mine in August, paused it in November when everything closed again, and then reactivated in January. I was able to see a couple films a weekend at the start since there more than a few out there I wanted to see from the holidays. Now, it is usually one a weekend, which makes it mostly worthwhile. I still generally see the Warner movies in the theater (I skipped Tom and Jerry but then ended up watching it on HBO Max), especially if a premium screen is an option.
Even the busiest movie I attended, a sold out show of Godzilla vs Kong, wasn't really all that full. The biggest issue that night was some people sitting in my reserved seat who then got all pissy when I asked them to move.

Reactivated my AMC A-List. Will be using that almost exclusively going forward. ArcLight Theaters is toast, so nowhere else I see myself going out of my way for. I do have an IPIC theater but we'll see, since they're cost prohibitive to make it a regular thing.

I got exactly one movie out of my Alamo sub. I think they cancelled all shows less than a week later.
I haven't reactivated it... But not sure I'll bother. For budgeting reasons, I've stopped going as frequently as I used to.

I looked at my A-List history in 2019 and used it 55 times.
I know the average Joe doesn’t even come close to seeing that many movies at the theater in 1 year. But I saw anywhere from 4 to 6 movies in the theater monthly and saw mostly the expensive premium screens like Dolby or IMAX, which were included.
Looking at the “Summer 2021” releases, there are maybe 15 or 16 releases from May to August that I would consider or definitely see in the theater.

Shiiiit I used A-List 95 times in 2019.
I’ll probably reactive it next month.

Re: Movie theater subscription programs - What are you going to do with them now?
Feel like I post this in one of Djariya's threads every couple of months. Theaters near me have been open since last August (although my go-to down the street only opened for a week or two before closing down again) but Connecticut has a business curfew, so no showings are available after 8. I almost exclusively go to movies at night after 8:30, so I've only seen Tenet in the last 8 months. The curfew will be pushed back to midnight on May 1st and eliminated completely on May 19th, so hopefully theaters will start adding later shows. However, I have a feeling shows won't be expanded too much until there are enough big name movies available and there's evidence of consumer demand. Until then, I won't even consider reactivating my AMC. Even then, if my local re-opens and still does $4.75 Tuesday nights, I may just stick to that. I'm not going more than once a week and most months only go 2-3 times a month.

Re: Movie theater subscription programs - What are you going to do with them now?
I have Regal Unlimited currently. Picked it up with a Black Friday deal in 2019 (paid the annual cost) Was using it quite a bit until the pandemic shut things down. Not sure if anyone else is using it, but Regal hasn't done very a very job in communicating options, in my opinion. I seem to recall an e-mail last spring indicating memberships would be put on pause and pre-paid months would be tacked on when things opened back up.
My situation is complicated slightly by having a small Regal location in my town. When it opened back up briefly, they were woefully understaffed. In fact, when Regal's main site indicated they were open, I showed up the first day and there was a sign on the door saying they weren't ready to open yet. I got someone's attention who was inside and they came out and told me they had an entirely new staff from management down and no one knew how to do anything. I came back days later and watched a film, but it was still chaotic. I saw a couple of movies in the weeks that followed, typically being the only one in the theater. The scheudling was a problem for me with theaters only being open on weekends. I understood the need to adjust, but I have more free time during the week. When Regal shut down all their theaters, I wondered if my local option would survive.
So now, the main Regal site says my theater will open in May. Is my membership still good for "x" number of months? I have no idea. Will my local theater be ready since I could assume they'd be starting from scratch again with putting staff together? No clue. I have no problem attending. I've been vaccinated, but will still wear a mask whether it was required or not. So I'll likely start showing up again determined to get my money's worth.
Chose the "plan to reactivate" option in the poll since that seemed to be the chocie that fit my situation.

Since Drafthouse closed the location here, that ship has sailed. Not sure if I'll ever start a different one.

Reactivated A-list a while back. In my city one Dolby ticket is almost as much as the monthly membership so it's a no brainer.

I too got accepted to Alamo weeks before the pandemic shut everything down. Not sure I will re-activate this year, even though I am fully vaccinated. The problem with theaters is that masks are pointless as everyone is eating and drinking, hence, they spend most of the film maskless anyway.

I cancelled my A-list in February, which means I can't re-subscribe until like August or September, but I don't see me going back to theaters until at least then anyway.

I think my Regal Unlimited starts again by June if I don't start it up sooner. The problem now is that there are so few new movies being released in the theaters. Hopefully things (movie release-wise) will be more back to normal by June.

Re: Movie theater subscription programs - What are you going to do with them now?
Any AMC A-List members having problems trying to cancel their membership?
We have 3 memberships in our family. We just received emails from AMC about them being reactivated July 1st. We received the emails June 25 @ 8:30 am. We're trying to cancel our memberships before we get billed. Problem: you have to cancel 5 "business days" before billing... which is July 1st it appears.
Wife tried to cancel her membership via the app, but she continually got a "Network Error" message. Same for me. App is not working and won't even show any movies listed. Went to the AMC website and it's not working properly either. Shows no movies. Can't log in. After numerous attempts, we managed to find a A-List CS phone number (same number appeared in several articles about AMC A-List. One was April 2021) late Friday... and guess what? Just found out that AMC is not accepting phone calls at that number.
So... where are we?
1) AMC sends emails notifying members of reactivation... exactly 5 days (not 5 "business days") before reactivating memberships
2) Coincidently, the AMC app and website both have "issues" which conveniently prevent you from logging in.
3) The AMC A-List customer service phone number is no longer talking phone calls.
Is AMC intentionally making it difficult to cancel an A-List membership?
Wife is absolutely furious.
Guess the alternative to getting AMC to cancel a membership is disputing the charge on a credit card.

Get at them on Twitter. You should have canceled a while ago in order to avoid this hassle 3 days before it will get renewed. They send plenty of emails.

The email was about AMC reactivating A-List memberships in general (because they are opening theaters), not about our particular renewal. Sorry for the mistaken impression. Our renewal is the 28th, so we have some time before getting billed. Neither the AMC app or website are working properly... and none of their CS phone numbers are accepting calls. Can't login or do anything. Can't even see movie listings. Just keep getting error message... or nothing. Accessing their FAQs is about it. All this is multiple phones, and multiple browsers on multiple computers. All updated to the latest versions.
Maybe AMC is working on it.
Thought about going to a theater to see if management there could help, but we're out of our home state and the nearest one is 40 miles one way... and appears to be the only AMC theater in Ohio.
Most of the AMC email I've been getting has been about their On Demand streaming service. We aren't doing that as there are too many better options. Aren't doing theater going any time soon, either. A-List was nice and we really used it for 6 months before the shut down, but for several reasons we're not going to theaters for the foreseeable future.
Regardless, it really shouldn't be this hard to cancel a membership. Who does AMC think they are? Comcast?

I just renewed by AMC membership, as my local AMCs (two within a few miles of each other) finally started going back to a 7-days a week plan. They were only open on weekends prior to now. I guess they suspended their six month cancellation rule (if you cancel membership, you have to wait six months to rejoin, as I didn't have any issues).

Since I made this thread back in mid April, I reactivated May 7th and have used A-List six times. I have seen more movies than that, the others were paid out of pocket at AMC and a few other theatres. But I am glad to be able to use A List again.

Someone from AMC did get back to my wife via Twitter and our A-List membership cancellation issue has been resolved for all our accounts.
However, that doesn't resolve the issues with their app and website (WTH is going on with them?).
Cancelling a membership with any sort of subscription-based service ought to be as simple as going into your account on their app or website and hitting a "Cancel Membership" button. WTH is wrong with these companies making a cancellation so complicated? This sort of behavior irritates consumers no end. We've been SirusXM members since buying our 2015 Altima, and cancelling that (we didn't listen at all on a recent cross-country trip) was so infuriating for my wife she swore we'll never, ever sign up again. She didn't quite get to that level while trying cancel our A-List memberships, but it was close. In any case, for various reasons we aren't likely to go to a theater any time in the foreseeable future.
