French Exit (2021, D: Jacobs) S: Michelle Pfeiffer, Lucas Hedges

“My plan was to die before the money ran out,” says 60-year-old penniless Manhattan socialite Frances Price (Michelle Pfeiffer), but things didn’t go as planned. Her husband Franklin has been dead for 12 years and with his vast inheritance gone, she cashes in the last of her possessions and resolves to live out her twilight days anonymously in a borrowed apartment in Paris, accompanied by her directionless son Malcolm (Lucas Hedges) and a cat named Small Frank—who may or may not embody the spirit of Frances’s dead husband.

It looks interesting but all the softly spoken, Wes Andersonian dialogue got a little annoying just in that 3 minute trailer.

Now it is opening wide when it probably came out last Fall or Winter?

I thought maybe Hulu or Amazon might pick it up.

It premiered at the NYFF in October and limited release in February.

If only it were anything near Anderson's level.

I saw it this afternoon and it was completely dull and uninteresting. Decent performances from Pfeiffer and Hedges though.

That’s too bad. I was hoping it would at least be interesting. I didn’t necessarily mean to compare it to a Wes Anderson movie but I didn’t know how else to describe that dry, mono tone delivery by the actors.

You aren't the first person I've seen make the comparison.

Agreed. Seemed as if all the pieces were in place for a fascinating, quirky character study, and then ... huge face plant. I feel like it all started going south with the dad in the cat.

Is that another one of those “banned” Dr. Seuss books?

This is on Starz.

I liked it when it was just Michelle and Hedges but when all those other characters came in and lived with them in that residence in France it went south and the dad in the cat was kind of silly.
