RIP Bertrand Tavernier 1941-2021

One of my favorite French filmmakers:

L'Horloger de St-Paul, Coup de Torchon, Un Dimanche à la Campagne, La Vie et Rien d'Autre, Le Juge et l'Assassin,... Many featuring long time collaborator/actor Philippe Noiret.

RIP

A Sunday in the Country is the best film of his that I have seen. RIP.

I'm not familiar with his work, but it looks like there are a fair number of his films on The Criterion Channel. I will definitely check them out!

I've always had a special fondness for 'Round Midnight as well. Dexter Gordon was one of my favorite jazz musicians, and he gives a great performance in it.

Re: RIP Bertrand Tavernier 1941-2021

Still need to see Sunday In The Country.

I'll echo the praise for Coup de Torchon. Would love to see that get the bump to Bd.

My favorite film of his, though, that I don't believe has ever made it to even a US or UK DVD release is (Passion of) Beatrice.
Set around the time of the Crusades, the film is a major downer that reeks of authentic feeling period atmosphere.
I still have the laserdisc, but haven't spun it in almost thirty years now. Would love to see it again.

Another film of his that I enjoy is the much lighter Revenge Of The Musketeers, with Sophie Marceau playing the swashbuckling daughter of one of the original Dumas' Musketeers.

Re: RIP Bertrand Tavernier 1941-2021

^ Yup! One thing I like about Tavernier is that he didn't stick to one genre. Drama, comedy, biopic, war film, historical film, police/detective film,... "L.627" for example, even though it sounds like a planet in Alien, was a pretty damn good crime/thriller. My favorite film of his, "Le Juge et l'Assassin" isn't his best but Philippe Noiret and Michel Galabru (who used to play in mediocre comedies) are fantastic antagonists, and the cinematography is gorgeous.
