The Little Things (2021, W/D: Hancock) S: Denzel Washington, Jared Leto, Rami Malek
Academy Award winners Denzel Washington (“Training Day,” “Glory”), Rami Malek (“Bohemian Rhapsody”) and Jared Leto (“Dallas Buyers Club”) star in the psychological thriller “The Little Things.” John Lee Hancock (“The Blind Side,” “Saving Mr. Banks,” “The Founder”) directed the film from his own original screenplay.
Kern County Deputy Sheriff Joe “Deke” Deacon (Washington) is sent to Los Angeles for what should have been a quick evidence-gathering assignment. Instead, he becomes embroiled in the search for a killer who is terrorizing the city. Leading the hunt, L.A. Sheriff Department Sergeant Jim Baxter (Malek), impressed with Deke’s cop instincts, unofficially engages his help. But as they track the killer, Baxter is unaware that the investigation is dredging up echoes of Deke’s past, uncovering disturbing secrets that could threaten more than his case.
The main cast also includes Natalie Morales (“Battle of the Sexes”), Terry Kinney (“Mile 22,” TV’s “Billions”), Chris Bauer (“Sully,” TV’s “The Deuce”), Joris Jarsky (TV’s “Bad Blood”), Isabel Arraiza (TV’s “Pearson”) and Michael Hyatt (“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”).
“The Little Things” is produced by Oscar- and Emmy-winning producer Mark Johnson (“Breaking Bad,” “Rain Man”) and Hancock, with Mike Drake and Kevin McCormick serving as executive producers.
Behind the scenes, Hancock reunited with several longtime collaborators, including Oscar-nominated director of photography John Schwartzman (“Seabiscuit,” “The Founder,” “Saving Mr. Banks”), Oscar-nominated production designer Michael Corenblith (“Apollo 13,” “The Founder,” “The Blind Side”) editor Robert Frazen (“The Founder”), and costume designer Daniel Orlandi (“The Founder,” “The Blind Side”). The music is by multiple Oscar-nominated composer Thomas Newman (“1917,” “Bridge of Spies,” “Saving Mr. Banks”).
Warner Bros. Pictures presents A Gran Via Production, “The Little Things” will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures. The film has slated for release on January 29, 2021 in theaters and on HBO Max and has been rated R for violent/disturbing images, language and full nudity.

So this is a non-tentpole WB movie that will go to HBO Max as well.
This kind of mid-level movie is going to suffer without mostly theatrical box office. I know January 29th there's not going to be enough theatres open in the U.S. for this to make money.

Most of WB’s mid-level films tanked last year anyway. Stuff like is better made for streaming.

Jared Leto already did a serial killer movie with Danny Glover and Dennis Quade back in the mid late 1990s called Switchback. It was on HBO a couple of times also

Most of Denzel's movies do pretty well, especially in the action and thriller genres. So I think this could have done okay with more theatrical support, but hence we'll never know.

Yeah The Way Back bombed in the Spring. But granted it's theatrical run got cut short because of you know what.

This was a smart move to put on Max. Now WW84, Dune, The Matrix 4 are another story.

Here’s a good interview Deadline with Hancock:

Interesting that this is a close to 30 year old script. Also some thoughts on being one of the first HBO Max day and date releases.

The trailer was alright. Didn't really get me that excited for it even though it has some good star power. This doesn't look like something that would draw a lot of people and make big money, so sharing it with HBO Max is probably a good thing.

I will pretty much watch anything with Denzel. The only 2 recent ones that I didn't see were Fences and Roman J. Israel. So I am looking forward to this on Friday.

This doesn’t look particularly great. Kind of reminds me of those Ashley Judd serial killer movies from the 90s.
I still love Denzel and the genre for the most part so I’ll watch it too. I’m looking forward to it.

Because the script was written 30 years ago. I posted an interview with the writer/director a few weeks back about it.

This was just ok. It wasn't bad, but I doubt I'll remember it next week.

I’m intrigued by the angle that he’s a cop from Kern County. Small town California vs big city.

I just finished it. It's not bad., I'd give it probably a B- It's an extremely slow burn psychological thriller. There's no action at all and very minimal violence. I would say Denzel gave a decent low key performance. But, this is not something that you really need to rush to see ASAP. And yeah it kind of reminded me of a 1990s style movie. This would have been great if it was released circa 1993 or 1994.
This time I watched on my Apple TV 4K and the movie actually had the 4K buttons/logos on it compared to Roku and it looks really nice in 4K. I'm not sure the Roku is getting a 4K stream as it only says "HD" on the menu.
If you have 2 hours to spare and want to see something brand new and that isn't low budget crap, sure give it a watch.

Yeah, it only says HD on the Roku, but my receiver showed it as 2160p/HDR (which only pops up for 4k).
The app definitely needs some polish, but you are at least still getting the 4K feed.

I was looking forward to this, but it really was a forgettable movie. It seemed like 1/2 the movie was just them following around the car of Leto’s character.

Malek was so stiff... like he was super distracting when on screen. I was there just for Denzel and his story was the best part of the whole story. lol
