Anyone heard of Aria?
Dear Anyone.
Thought I wasn't into Anime till I saw 2 episodes on different websites of a beautiful, deceptively slow series about gondola girls on Mars, called Aria. It SEEMED like it was moving at a glacial place but the atmosphere, the beauty of the scenery and the storylines absolutely got to me, like living a dream. Not sure if it's a Ghibli series (I don't REALLY count those as anime, they're their own thing) but it was good enough. Anyway.
Anyone know of it, where I could see more of it, or (affordably, if it's a megabucks collector's item I'd have to say 'no') buy it on DVD anywhere? Be happy just to watch it online. If it helps anyone, there was a little alien creature in it they called a cat but it definitely wasn't. If this isn't asking too much - the two episodes I saw were subtitled in really badly spelled English and the subtitles were way off what was happening on the screen, making it a bit difficult to follow. Are there any English dubbed episodes around, or episodes with accurate subtitles (would PREFER dubbed but I know that's not always possible.)
Yours hopefully - I'm sure SOMEONE must have heard of it here, it's very beautifully done even though it's not one of the all-out action ones - saw one of those called Kingsglaive once that was brilliant, almost photo-real.
Chris.

There are three seasons, all streaming on Crunchyroll (free with commercials).
It's based on a manga by Kozue Amano and it and the prequel series, Aqua, have recently been rereleased by Tokyopop in pretty nice collections called "Aria: The Masterpiece". They had previously released them way back when but these are bigger collected volumes. I gave them to my daughter for Xmas and she loves them.
The DVD/Blu releases are distributed by Nozomi, which is the publishing arm of rightstuf anime (https://www.rightstufanime.com/).

Re: Anyone heard of Aria?
Dear Fujishig.
Thanks very much for that, never heard of Crunchyroll, strange name for an anime site! Sounds more like a chocolate bar, but there you go.
I loved the 2 episodes I saw. One of them had that little 'cat' on a secret journey to visit a kind of Zen master amongst his kind, you got a look into their lives in a lovely, alien way. And both those episodes were so proud of their artwork, long, slow pans just to show you how well drawn everything was. Deservedly so, I mean the artwork's one of the things that made it stand out for me, it was Ghibli standard.
Looking forwards to seeing more episodes. Why must so much manga be so violent and sexual, never understood that. Are there any more series of this kind of gentler anime out there, do you know?
Yours respectfully
Chris.

Yes, violent and suggestive anime is what drove the genre to fame in the West. But there are many, many anime series produced in Japan that are aimed at completely different audiences. You'd probably enjoy Shoujo anime more than violent fare like Ninja Scroll. Anime has something for most everyone, though they aren't always popular enough to get English dubs.

My top recommendation for you would be Clannad, widely considered one of the greatest and most popular anime ever made. Many of the shows from Kyoto Animation sound like they'd be a good fit for you.

Here's the page for the series on Anime News Network. It dates from 2005:

It sounds fascinating to me as well. Apparently it's had several sequels also.
Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
It's cheaper on The Right Stuf site than on Amazon and has got three rave reviews:
