Superman (P: J.J. Abrams) News and Rumors

Shadow and Act has learned exclusively from studio sources that Ta-Nehisi Coates is writing an upcoming Superman feature film from DC Films and Warner Bros. Pictures. The film is very early into the development process with no start or release date targeted. J.J. Abrams will produce the feature under his Bad Robot shingle and Hannah Minghella will serve as producer.

We're hearing that no director is attached as of yet and plot details remain under wraps. Additionally, the search for an actor to play Kal-El / Superman hasn't started yet.

Well... it's been rumored for a year and a half, so not too surprising.

Can't wait until we find out that Lex Luthor is really the Emperor in the third film of the trilogy.

I can’t wait to see Superman fight Nuclear Man in this new movie.

Nuclear Man!!

I got tired of Abrams when he blinded me with all the lens flares going back to Super 8. I liked Star Trek, but dammit, go do something that isn’t franchise related.

Coates being attached to the project I kind of thought this, and not sure what the HR source is, but this is going to... upset some people.

He's now achieved Schumacher status level and has become someone you don't want anywhere near or connected to a beloved franchise.

Probably not as much as it will upset Warner Bros when it disappoints both creatively and financially.

What is there to lose from their standpoint, though?

Also, just a reminder they also cast a minority Supergirl (for the Flash movie), and I would think both would be part of a multiverse kind of deal. Worked for Spider-man.

Attacking this more from a point of not liking J.J. Abrams as a "filmmaker". I just think he is creatively bankrupt.

I just looked up Ta-Nehisi Coates in IMBD. He’s got precisely jack shit going for his filmography.

Is this supposed to take over for Man of Steel 2 or is this an alternate Superman?

I think he's ok as a producer, though, assuming he's not directing? I dunno, I don't think he's the kiss of death a lot of you guys seem to. And again, how much worse could it be?

Ugh.. no kidding. I want to like Abrams, but he doesn’t have a great track record when he tries taking over franchises.

They are probably under a false impression he can produce a movie with the same quality as Into The Spiderverse or Black Panther.

I agree. Granted the Star Wars franchise ended up being a major disappointment but I don’t know if we can blame him (entirely) for that. Rise of Skywalker was basically painted into a shitty corner and he did his best to get it out.

I didn’t realize he didn’t direct Star Trek Beyond, arguably the worst of the New Trek franchise.

IMO, Mission: Impossible III and Super 8 are his best directing efforts.

At one point, I thought he would be the next Spielberg. He hasn’t lived up to that but in hindsight, it probably wasn’t fair to have those expectations of him.

Re: Superman (P: J.J. Abrams) News and Rumors

So after JJ crashed and burned the Star Trek movie franchise and left the Star Wars fandom tearing each others' throats out, Warner Bros said "Hey, let's hire this guy to revitalize Superman and do some DC projects!"

I think you guys forget the excitement at least over the first installments of his Trek and Star Wars. So the lesson is, have him reboot a franchise and then get him the heck away.

As long as it’s multiverse we’re all good. I don’t want to lose Cavill

I could accept this as a standalone Joker type of movie, sure. (It isn't exactly off to a hot start though)

I thought that Star Trek was brilliant and fantastic and so well cast.

JJ’s production company Bad Robot has like a $250M development deal with WB that he signed in 2019. It covers movies, TV, and streaming. Just because his name is attached it doesn’t mean he’s hands on or will be directing.

Some would also say he revitalized Mission:Impossible franchise with directing a really good 3 and staying on as EP on subsequent. Only gotten better.
