KIMI (2022, D: Soderbergh) S: Zoe Kravitz

EXCLUSIVE: After signing an overall deal with HBO Max, Steven Soderbergh looks to have found his next feature film with the studio as he has come on to direct the New Line Max Original feature KIMI with Zoe Kravitz on board to star. The film will premiere exclusively on HBO Max.

David Koepp penned the script and will produce along with Michael Polaire. The film follows an agoraphobic tech worker who discovers recorded evidence of a violent crime during an ordinary data stream review, she tries reporting it up the chain of command at her company. Meeting with resistance and bureaucracy, she realizes that in order to get involved she will have to do the thing she fears the most — leave her apartment.

The film would mark the second collaboration between the Warner Bros. Pictures Group, HBO Max and Soderbergh since the recent restructuring of the studio and the third between Soderbergh and HBO Max. It follows the upcoming starry Max Original ensemble crime thriller from Warner Bros. Pictures, No Sudden Move, starring Don Cheadle, Benicio Del Toro, David Harbour, Amy Seimetz, Jon Hamm, Ray Liotta, Kieran Culkin, Brendan Fraser, Noah Jupe, Bill Duke, Frankie Shaw, and Julia Fox. His most recent pic Let Them Talk, with Meryl Streep, premiered on HBO Max in December.

Re: KIMI (2022, D: Soderbergh) S: Zoe Kravitz

Steven Soderbergh’s original thriller KIMI, starring Zoë Kravitz (The Batman), will stream exclusively on HBO Max beginning February 10, Warner Bros. Pictures announced today.

The film from New Line Cinema and HBO Max watches as an agoraphobic Seattle tech worker uncovers evidence of a crime.

David Koepp penned the script, with Byron Bowers (No Sudden Move), Jaime Camil (Schmigadoon), Erika Christensen (Traffic), Derek DelGaudio (Derek DelGaudio’s In & Of Itself), Robin Givens (Riverdale), Charles Halford (Logan Lucky), Devin Retray (Side Effects), Jacob Vargas (The 33) and Rita Wilson (the Mamma Mia! films) rounding out the cast.

Could be interesting with Soderbergh's direction and Koepp's script.

Re: KIMI (2022, D: Soderbergh) S: Zoe Kravitz

Director Steven Soderbergh returns to the thriller genre with his next film, KIMI, which debuts exclusively on HBO Max on February 10. Soderbergh teamed with Spider-Man and Jurassic Park screenwriter David Koepp for the New Line film, which stars The Batman's Zoë Kravitz and was made during the pandemic.

The film's title refers to a fictitious Alexa/Siri-like voice-activated digital assistant called KIMI. It hears everything you say all the time, recording everything for a Big Brother-like corporation. Kravitz plays Angela Childs, a voice stream interpreter who overhears a murder on a recording she was analyzing. Angela is shaken after reaching out to her colleagues. Why are her employers resistant to her trying to bring this to the authorities' attention?

In addition to Zoë Kravitz, the cast includes Jaime Camil, Erika Christensen, Derek DelGaudio, Robin Givens, Charles Halford, Devin Retray, Jacob Vargas, and Rita Wilson.

Looks watchable enough. I like when Soderbergh slums it with genre pix.

There's a lot I resent about the new streaming reality we live in, but one of the pluses is that every 6 months or so a new Soderberg shows up on my tv as if conjured out of thin air.

Looked good in 4k. I liked it, a lot. I won't elaborate any further avoid spoilering. Kravitz does a good job as Angela. The film felt shorter than the actual 2.5 hrs. I guess it locked me in for the ride.

Probably because it is an hour shorter than that.

A friend saw it and said it was great. RT has it at 90% but the reviews on IMDB are horrid. It's got like a 5.8, so haters are dragging it down over there. It's in 4K DV/ 5.1 on HBO MAX.

No wonder. I just a quick Google search and it was listed at 2.5 hr. I should've checked back on HBO when that didn't seem quite right. It's not as if I get paid for this.

What sucks is DJ Jariya will probably have to see Marry Me twice in theaters (just to be sure it’s as bad as he thought the first time) before he sees this one and gives us a review.

Life isn’t fair sometimes. And having to be patient sucks. ☹️

It has less than 500 reviews on imdb, which is troll kingdom. But this does seem like a critics like/fans indifferent type deal.

Yup. The streaming model is great for him and has reinvigorated his desire to make films again.

This was a nice little Rear Window-esque thriller with a tight runtime. It fits in nicely with some of his other films like Side Effects and Unsane.

I thought this was kinda terrible, although I'll admit it had an interesting premise. But the approach felt unoriginal, and the ending (inside the apartment) downright laughable.

Re: KIMI (2022, D: Soderbergh) S: Zoe Kravitz

This is good (not great), but very slight. I liked No Sudden Move better if we're comparing recent Soderbergh movies. You can tell it was shot during a pandemic for peanuts. While Kimi isn't about covid and lockdowns per se, they are very much part of the film's reality and inform much of what's going on. I know there have been lots tv shows and some movies that have dealt with this stuff already, but this was the first thing I've seen that acknowledges the current state of the world.

Zoe Kravitz was good and I loved the throwback style score. Plot wise the other shoe never really drops like I thought it might and it ends up a fairly conventional little thriller. Nothing I'm in a hurry to revisit, but it's always nice to get a well crafted thriller for adults. It reminds me of the 80's and 90's when we would get stuff like this all the time. It also clocks in at under 90 minutes, so even you don't like it, the investment is minimal.

I enjoyed it and it fits in with Soderbergh's other lower budget fare. Kravitz is very good here, too.

Re: KIMI (2022, D: Soderbergh) S: Zoe Kravitz

I enjoyed it as well.

I particularly liked

Spoiler:
How they showed her outside-the-apartment time as she was dealing with her PTSD agoraphobia. Head down, avoiding eye contact, speed walking, always staying close to a wall/rail, etc.

Far better than showing strange visual effects to represent her stress.

Felt very real and logical.

I took it seriously and felt the suspense.

Some unique camera work.

Predictably good Soderbergh.

Basically a lot of high profile projects with black leads, females or or lgbtq people will get neg targeted by incels/white nationalists on imdb. The lions share of imdb voters aren't like that but I would take any rating with a grain of salt from that site if it's something that becomes high profile enough

Watched it tonight. Nothing too spectacular but I liked it and found it thoroughly watchable throughout. Zoe's hair was the true star of the movie and owned every scene in the film.
Wish the bad guys were somehow more interesting or threatening or smart, but I guess I can live with it.

Nifty Rear Window-type thriller for the Covid and Alexa era. I liked the brisk runtime as well.

Re: KIMI (2022, D: Soderbergh) S: Zoe Kravitz

Just watched this tonight. Good movie. Nifty thriller at 90 minutes.

The common mistake that Hollywood would have made would have been to beef up the details surrounding the murder and cover-up to make the overall story "more substantial." This wisely just had the story it needed to make the plot work.

My one complaint is that at the end when it is supposed to be too dark to see, it was not at all too dark to see.
