Spun off from the UHD release announcements thread. An announcement was made for Dirty Dancing coming to UHD. I mentioned that I hadn’t seen the movie in full, but that I know the basic plot to the movie and have seen parts of it but not the full film.

So what popular films have you not seen all the way through, but are familiar with?

There are, of course, quite a few, but given my taste in movies and the era I grew up in the two most peculiar omissions are:

The Breakfast Club
The Karate Kid

I've also never seen Ghost or Home Alone, but those were in college so not as peculiar to me.

The Wizard of Oz is my big one - I know all the beats, all the plot points and have seen most of the scenes just because of pop culture references but I've never sat down and watched it from start to finish.

Titanic - Never seen any of it
Shawshank - I've seen the whole movie overall but never in one sitting. I always found it extremely boring.

Casablanca

This is one of those that will come to me a little at a time. Just in the last few months I watched "Coming To America" and "Top Gun" in full for the first time. A lot of it is Teen stuff and Romantic films, -"Pretty In Pink" for example, though I know of "Blaine" and "Ducky" and most of the plot-turns.

Turned off Citizen Kane halfway through because I was bored and it played differently in a post-Trump world.

Turned off Schindler's List about 75-80% through because it was profoundly upsetting.

That's too bad. The coda to Schindler's List was my favorite part of the movie, one of my favorite parts of any movie. Schindler facing down a thirteen year old soldier is another image that I won't forget.

Most mob movies, with exception of Godfather trilogy. Stuff like Casino and Goodfellas.

The one that jumps out at me immediately is A Christmas Story. With TBS' marathons, I know I've caught every vignette at least once (tongue on the pole, "fudge", the Little Orphan Annie decoder ring, the leg lamp, the mall Santa) yet I've never once seen it beginning-to-end.

It's A Wonderful Life

I've never seen Titanic, but I've seen tons of snippets. I just recently watched all of Mystery Men for the first time. I'd caught bits and pieces on cable showings over the years but we finally did the whole thing. It could use a little tightening, but it's still fun.

Way too many to list, but A CHRISTMAS STORY is one of them. I've started watching TERMS OF ENDEARMENT (1983) more than once, simply because it won Best Picture, but just can't get through it. HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN and WHITE CHRISTMAS are big favorites and holiday essentials for some Boomers, but I've never finished either one. CADDYSHACK and STRIPES are two others--not a lot of 1980s comedies appeal to me. And more recently THE DA VINCI CODE.

Shawshank-I’ve yet to watch it in one sitting.

The only one I want to see I'm sure I'll get around to eventually is Casablanca. The time I could have watched Gone With The Wind has come and gone (though I might read the book some day).

The Godfather and The Godfather II - The only way I've ever seen them was via the Godfather Saga version on NBC in the 1970s. Between the edited violence and language, as well as the chronological editing of the whole story, I think its fair I haven't seen either.

Similarly, I've only seen The Exorcist as the TV edit, which similarly leads me to believe that I've never actually seen it.

I've actually watched episodes of "The Movies That Made Us' on "Home Alone" and "Elf", yet I'd not watched either film; I just like "Making Of"s, so it didn't matter to me. I actually had a copy of the "Elf" DVD that some online retailer had sent me as a free gift, and I still hadn't watched it (of course, they also sent me "Birdemic", the "killer bird" movie). However, I was impressed with Director Jon Favreau's approach to "Elf", so I finally got around to watching it. I've never watched "Christmas Vacation" either, though I know most of the jokes.

Casablanca (I've seen parts of it in school and I've watched Barb Wire, which is basically the same movie)
Gone with the Wind (I tried to watch it, but the theatric acting style and the look, aren't for me)
The Goonies (just never saw it)
Brazil (I've watched bits of it, but never the whole thing)
Citizen Kane (parts of it in school, even wrote a test on the subject, but never watched the movie)

and most musicals, because I just don't like musicals, they do not feel lilke movies to me.

Those of you who haven't watched Casablanca have weekend homework to do.

I actually haven’t seen all of The Goonies either. For some reason I just don’t really care about it, even though I like 80s movies similar to it.

You mean you don't care about movies where the child actors, for some unknown reason, JUST HAVE TO SHOUT EVERY SINGLE LINE OF DIALOGUE????????!!!!!!!?????

I did see the ending on YouTube, which is excellent. The desperation of the German army is something I know about, but seeing exploitation of or violence against children is something that I just don't care to see in my entertainment. I read about it enough in the news. It took me a few years to pick up Blood Meridian again and finish it after the passage detailing the slaughter of the Comanche village. I don't hold it against either work, as they are among the greatest films/novels I've ever taken in, respectively.

Other people posting also remind me that I haven't seen anything other than clips of the Godfather movies, nor seen the entirety of Goodfellas. The latter isn't bad, but I just don't like films that romanticize gangsters. I prefer stuff like Heat and Drive, when it comes to crime films.

I hear you. I'm glad I watched Schindler's List once; I won't watch it again.
