The Marksman (2021, D: Lorenz) S: Neeson
Hardened Arizona rancher Jim Hanson (Liam Neeson) simply wants to be left alone as he fends off eviction notices and tries to make a living on an isolated stretch of a borderland. But everything changes when Hanson, an ex-Marine sharpshooter, witnesses 11-year-old migrant Miguel (Jacob Perez) fleeing with his mother Rosa (Teresa Ruiz) from drug cartel assassins led by the ruthless Mauricio (Juan Pablo Raba). After being caught in a shoot-out, a dying Rosa begs Jim to take her son to safety to her family in Chicago. Defying his cop daughter Sarah (Katheryn Winnick), Jim sneaks Miguel out of the local U.S. Customs and Border Patrol station, and together, they hit the road with the group of killers in pursuit. Jim and Miguel slowly begin to overcome their differences and begin to forge an unlikely friendship, while Mauricio and his fellow assassins blaze a cold-blooded trail, hot on their heels. When they finally meet on a Midwestern farm, a fight to the death ensues as Jim uses his military skills and code of honor to defend the boy he’s come to love.

I'll see it when I'm able to. But, too bad it's going to bomb like Honest Thief because it's highly unlikely very many theatres will be open come January 22nd.

In talking about Neeson remaining a bankable action star for Open Road Films, the studio's Tom Ortenberg said, “In addition to being one of the biggest movie stars in the world, Liam Neeson has been a good luck charm for Open Road. Our first #1 film was the Liam starrer The Grey, and almost nine years later, Liam headlined Honest Thief, which spent 2 weeks as the #1 movie in America this October. We expect similar success with The Marksman, a terrific film by Robert Lorenz, that combines the action we expect from Liam along with a deeply-drawn character study of the human condition.”

It looks like they will release this a week earlier. So it now opens this Friday.

Liam Neeson is claiming he's going to be done with action movies after he finishes a couple more this year.
"Oh, yeah. I think so," he tells ET's Lauren Zima. "I'm 68 and a half. 69 this year. There's a couple more I'm going to do this year -- hopefully, COVID allowing us -- there's a couple in the pipeline and, then I think that will probably be it. Well, unless I'm on a Zimmer frame or something."

This is still playing in my area, so I decided to catch a matinee today. I was the only one in the auditorium watching it.
Anyways, it was okay. It was entertaining and I was never bored. It's basically one of Neeson's quick action fix movies with a very simple plot and not a lot of substance. I did like this better than Honest Thief. The guy who played the main villain was pretty good.
One thing I did find incredibly dumb was:
Katheryn Winnick played Neeson’s step daughter, but she could have been edited out and it would have made no impact on the movie.

This was super dull. A step down from the mildly enjoyable, previous Neeson film, Honest Thief. The action is pedestrian.

I was not that excited to watch this and thought most of it would happen in the desert but I was pleasantly surprised.
It is not a masterpiece but a good time killer on a Sat night and not a lot of big theatrical movies to choose from or rent these days and I will take what I can get.

I thought it was a well-made film, it's just fairly predictable. Since the director is a long-time associate of Clint Eastwood, I imagine it was pitched to him first. I thought the action was more credible than most of the films Neeson's done in his post-"Taken" career.
