Jiu Jitsu (2020) -- Nicolas Cage, Tony Jaa, Frank Grillo, Alain Moussi

Every six years, an ancient order of expert Jiu Jitsu fighters faces a vicious race of alien invaders in a battle for Earth. For thousands of years, the fighters that protect Earth have won…until now. When celebrated war hero Jake Barnes (Alain Moussi) is defeated by Brax, the indomitable leader of the invaders, the future of humanity hangs in the balance. Injured and suffering from amnesia, Jake is rescued by Wylie (Nicolas Cage), Keung and his team of fellow Jiu Jitsu fighters. They must help Jake to regain his strength in order to band together and defeat Brax in an epic battle that will once again determine the fate of mankind

This comes out on VOD November 20th. I have to see this. This just sounds like a B movie delight

Re: Jiu Jitsu (2020) -- Nicolas Cage, Tony Jaa, Frank Grillo, Alain Moussi

Good lord that poster! Direct-to-video circa 1998. Moussi's arm doesn't look like it's attached properly.

I remember a modest amount of hype when this was first announced in early 2019, mainly surrounding its eclectic cast along with the director of those KICKBOXER do-overs, but news about it has been pretty spotty since then. Hopefully it's as enjoyably out-of-left-field as it sounds, but I'll keep my expectations level. I just can't imagine how jiu jitsu would be an effective measure against any alien invasion – unless those aliens only know to fight using jiu jitsu – but I'm sure the movie will school me.

A bit more plot from slashfilm:

Jake McCall is a combat vet who now works as an assistant wrestling coach for a small college whose major claim is its wrestling team. He is married to a beautiful, caring wife and has a precocious five-year-old boy, and his life with them in a peaceful college town is idyllic (perfect outcome for a combat vet with PTSD). Or so he believes.

Long ago, floating particles from outer space took forms in human brains and have controlled human bodies by altering MEMORIES. A violent world-takeover now looms, an apocalyptic day that has been set for over a century. The players in this multi-generational plan are known only to each other, and only at certain times.

Jake McCall is at the center of the resistance to this plan, the lynchpin of the whole operation. And he has no idea.

The aliens have taken him, cloaked his brain with an array of false memories and perceptions, and robbed his life of the one thing he needs to save the world.

Jiu Jitsu.

Cage has a number of intriguing genre shows on his plate, including the truffle hog rescue epic PIG, Cage battling deranged theme park animatronics in WILLY'S WONDERLAND and a supernatural thriller with Japan's director Sion Sono called PRISONERS OF THE GHOSTLAND that's sounds even more insane than JIU JITSU:

“I’m thrilled about it! It’s unlike anything I’ve ever read before,” Cage said of the film during the Film Festival and Awards Macao, according to Screen Anarchy. “It might be the wildest movie I’ve ever made, and that’s saying something. It’s out there. I wear a skintight black leather jumpsuit with grenades attached to different body parts, and if I don’t rescue the governor’s daughter from this state line where they’re all ghosts and bring her back they’re gonna blow me up. It’s just crazy. It’s way out there.”
The guy certainly keeps things interesting.

If you accept Nic Cage into your heart, he really elevates theses movies and they’re good to watch.

Kinda where I was going.

Or, "for just $5.99, you too can save a Nic Cage film".

My 12 year old son does jiu jitsu... this sounds like something he'd come up with if I asked him to write a short story and add JJ to the mix. I must watch this.

Considering how much I've enjoyed some of Cage's recent off-the-wall fare, I'd pony up in a kickstarter or two for him to keep making more gonzo shit with cult-y international directors.

This thread made me realize that I haven't seen a Nicolas Cage movie since WINDTALKERS in 2002 and ADAPTATION in 2003. I should definitely check out some of these newer ones.

I mean, I still consider Nick Cage young......this seems like one of those "On his way out" flicks.

I second both of those as two of the best of his post-whatever run. MOM & DAD is up there, too. DOG EAT DOG, JOE and THE TRUST have their moments, as do several others, even when the overall results are so-so. I don't think I've rated any of his films of the past decade or more higher than a 6 or 7 out of 10, sometimes even a 5 or less, but It rarely seems like Cage chooses projects solely for the paycheck (even if that's what he's doing, I don't know). Most of them have quirks that make them a little more intriguing than the usual DTV fare that a lot of actors from his generation pick up to pay the rent. For me, though, it's the directors that often pique my interest, as he jumps from the aforementioned international cult directors (Sion Sono, Richard Stanley, Uli Edel) to veterans of former studio pictures who bring some polish to cliched action material (Roger Donaldson, Simon West), to producers, screenwriters, TV directors and stunt guys looking to dabble in features without too much risk and the bonus of being able to put title cards reading "Academy Award Winner Nicolas Cage" on their trailers. Just don't go in expecting the cerebral highs of ADAPTATION or the massive production budget of something like WINDTALKERS (which wasn't very good, anyway), and you might find much to enjoy. As 'Troy Stiffler' said earlier, just accept Cage into your heart . . .

Check out Joe (2013) directed by David Gordon Green. Really good film and a great performance from Cage.

That looks like the jacket style he wears in Wild at Heart.

Nic Cage is very cool.

He plays traditional roles when he wants.

And from interviews, he has said that he loves German expressionism. And when you view his roles with that consideration, they make more sense. Everyone else is doing Stanislavski. Cage does Cage.

"Ancient order of expert Jiu Jitsu fighters"? Jiu Jitsu was invented in the early 20th Century. I'm guessing I shouldn't be watching this Jiu Jitsu fighters vs. alien story for its historical accuracy. But I WILL be watching it because it looks like sooooo much cheesy goodness!
