Riz Ahmed was amazing in this. Award-caliber performance. I don’t have faith he’ll get recognized... but we’ll see. Paul Raci should get a supporting nom too.

Watched this on Prime. Excellent movie.

This was great. Riz Ahmed deserves a lot of praise. Sound design did a great job of showing what he was experiencing.

Funny, I just heard about this film when reading the news this morning, I'll check it out.

thought it was good overall

I thought the movie was ok. I found it weird that once he stopped playing music it was never really mentioned much again. The focus on the girlfriend rather than the loss of his ability to play and listen to music was a little odd considering every musician I know whole life revolves around music.

It did educate me more on cochlear implants. I always found it odd that a large amount of the deaf community was against them but after hearing what the person actually hears I'm not sure I would want one either. I naively thought you would be able to hear the same as someone who isn't deaf but that's clearly not the case. I'm sure the technology will eventually get there but it certainly isn't at the level I thought it was.

That's weird because I felt that desire to play music was always there, and I felt a great sense of loss coming from him in not having his music. I mean, the girlfriend was his music partner. I felt his desire to get back to her was in large part to get back to the music.

Plus, I think focusing too much more on his loss of music would only reinforce the idea that his life is now less than when the message of that place was all about moving forward and not feeling handicapped.

Riz deserves an Oscar nom for this. His acting when they first turned on the implants from hope to utter dismay in a matter of seconds was incredible. He's great in everything, even Rogue One.


The first movie I went to when I got the free trial of prime and skipped Coming to America 2.

Riz said he looks at life differently now after watching this movie and he also met his wife in the same time period.

There is supposedly a Criterion edition of the film coming out in 2022. Will definitely pick it up. I really liked the movie.

Really enjoyed this, much more than I expected to. Riz Ahmed and Paul Raci were fantastic.

I thought there scenes together were so good it ended up being my biggest criticism. For me, the emotional climax was 25 minutes before the movie actually ended, and while I understand there was more story to tell I didn't think it was as interesting.

Watched this (finally!) yesterday before the Oscars....and pleasantly surprised at how solid and effective this little film was. Loved every minute of it.

This was one of the Best Picture nominees I figured I'd have zero interest in and it turned out to be one of my favorite of the eight. Give it a chance if you're on the fence.

I think she might have sold out and become more pop from what I’m piecing together, but pretty sure I’m not playing with a full deck.

Made a mistake and watched The Father and this back to back. Was not prepared for the sadness.





No, I think it was him enjoying to "love the silence" and that he found peace in it. I found the ending as hopeful, not despondent.

I saw the ending the same way. I definitely didn't see it in some dark way.

"It's time. It's time, I gotta do something. Try to save my fucking life. So that's what I'm doing. No one else is going to save my life. If I just sit here and diddle around what am I going to have? Nothing. Okay? And all this shit? What does it matter? What does it matter? It just passes. If I disappear, like who cares? Nobody cares, man. Seriously. And that's okay. That's life. That's life. No, for real. Okay? It just passes. It just fucking passes."

These were his words to Joe BEFORE the implants were a bust, before he ended things with his girlfriend and before he lost the means to buy back his trailer/house and belongings. In his own words he tried and failed to save his life.

Let's review:
-Was heroin/drug addict.
-Played drums in metal band.
-Nihilistic, fatalistic worldview to say the least.
-Sold his trailer/housing and last belongings to pay for hearing implant.
-Hearing implant is a bust, the distorted metallic sound is worse than silence.
-Leaves girlfriend because he sees she's changed and better off without him (notice she started picking at her arm when he mentioned "getting back on it" and playing again).
-Has no money. Is homeless. Is deaf. Implants a bust. Loses livelihood. Loses the ability to clearly hear music, his passion. Loses love of his life.

Guy is literally left with nothing at the end. Somehow this is a hopeful ending because he takes out of the implants because the distorted godawful sound is maddening and silence is preferable? It's open to interpretation and he by default "finds the stillness" but I just can't see how this is a hopeful ending. He's clearly come to terms with what is next.

Not everyone who does drugs or plays in a metal band is suicidal. The tattoo is a Richard Hell reference - or even a reference to the book of the same name. It's an excellent read by the way, especially if you have any interest in the birth of punk music.

It has been a while since I saw the movie, but I don't recall a remarkably fatalistic worldview, aside from his reaction to his diagnosis, which I found understandable. Maybe you could refresh my memory on that. Was it just because they played dark music and such?

Your last sentence pretty much says it all, but I guess we view the way it was played differently. He has come to accept what comes next in life. Sometimes you need to hit bottom before you can truly appreciate what you have. He hit that place, and in that moment, he was finally able to truly appreciate silence.

Stepping outside the movie for a moment, it would seem weird if a movie that the deaf community got behind so fully because of its message that being deaf isn't a handicap ended with the main character deciding to kill himself because he's deaf. But clearly that's how you choose to view it, and one can certainly make that argument.

You see that tattoo see someone who is suicidal while I see someone with good taste in music or at least an appreciation for musical history. Now that I really think about it, I have a concert picture of Sid Vicious in which he's wearing a button on his leather jacket that says please kill me.
