I think it could possibly be a neck and neck race.

Re: What will be no.1 at the B.O Avengers AOU weekend 3 or Mad Max FR opening weekend

May 1st - May 3rd: Avengers: Age of Ultron does $225-230M.
May 10th - May 12th: Avengers: Age of Ultron does $110-115M.
May 15th - May 17th: Avengers: Age of Ultron does $60-65M. Pitch Perfect 2 is number two whereas Mad Max: Fury Road is in third.

I'm calling it right now, Pitch Perfect 2 does more in its first week out the gate than Pitch Perfect did during its overall theatrical release.

Tomorrowland will be the film that unseats Avengers from number one.

Pretty sure you're right about Pitch Perfect. Basically every female between the ages of 6 and 46 wants to see it, along with more than a few men, men who aren't even fathers/husbands to those women!

I think Pitch Perfect 2 is a guarantee lock for an opening weekend of $50M+ based upon how Universal has been advertising it and just look at how 50 Shades of Grey and Furious 7 did on their opening weekends. In fact, 50 Shades was the last widely-released film geared specifically for women. I know Hot Pursuit comes out the weekend before, but let's be real, that films is DOA as nobody gives a fuck about Greasy Reese anymore.

If any film is outing Avengers in its third weekend, its Pitch Perfect 2 and not Mad Max.

I don't think anyone is arguing that, but Warner doesn't have a really good track record for releasing big-budget films based upon cult properties in May. Warner doesn't have a really good track record for releasing anything in May.

Is Mad Max even a movie series that appeals to the mainstream? I always took it more for a cult movie series. None of the previous movies in the series ever came anywhere close to topping the box office charts. I can't imagine the new movie will do so either.

I may want to see Mad Max more than AoU but... it's fucking AoU. The sequel to The Avengers. Yeah. That's going to be big.

As of online ticket pre-sales two weeks ago, the film was already a lock for another $200M+ opening weekend. I know of nobody that has already purchased tickets for AoU yet other than myself and a few others... and that was only because the local IMAX theater accidentally had tickets for $10.50 a pop on Fandango rather than the usual $18.00 a piece.

Will they honor it? Yes, because they did the same for Furious 7 as they both went up at the same time.

No contest. AoU. Mad Max is not a huge mainstream franchise.

I'm assuming this post was made in jest...
I don't give a shit about either of these movies, but this isn't even in question. That being said, I voted for Mad Max just to be cheeky.

Agree with others that Pitch Perfect has a better chance to win the weekend then Mad Max.

Mad Max:FR is rated R, right? The other two aren't. I'm still rooting for Max though.

I'm surprised noone here has done a thread for Avengers 2 vs Star Wars VII.... which will have a higher BO. That should be a fascinating contest.

I dunno. R-rated movies have been showing some good life lately (Just when I thought Sin City 2 was the nail-in-the-coffin for comic/geek movies) There's gotta be a good chance now.

I voted for Mad Max, Avenger will have played for two weeks by then, and if it does huge numbers most people will have seen it and moved on. I hope Max Max is at least a modest hit here in the US, then does well enough worlwide to give us more sequels.

Everyone remembers THE AVENGERS from three years ago, had a good time with it, and wants to see the sequel. No one remembers or cares about MAD MAX except some of the old-timers here and it doesn't have any stars. Tom Hardy is not a star that most people know and nobody cares about Charlize Theron.

You figure OW 205-215
2nd Week 100
3rd week 50-55 million

I expect Mad Max to get 40-50 million.

Re: What will be no.1 at the B.O Avengers AOU weekend 3 or Mad Max FR opening weekend

Pitch Perfect 2 - $45-$50 million
Avengers - $40 - $45 million
Mad Max - $30 - $35 million

Like a few have said, outside of us old timers, most people aren't going to care about Mad Max. It's killing will be made internationally. I'd be surprised if this does more than $125 in the states. (Honestly I have a Pirhana 3D, Snake on a Plane internet hype feeling about Mad Max, box office wise.)

Pitch Perfect 2 demographic cross over will likely take out both Avengers and Mad Max that week.

Opening weekend? I really want to see MM, but I'm thinking 40-50 mil will be its total domestic BO. I'm getting a Dredd/Scott Pilgrim vibe where the Internet is pumped, but I suspect the general population won't care.

I hope I'm wrong.

I also fear that it'll make its most impact internationally than domestically. I fear it may be too much for mainstream cinema today. Too out there, if you get what I'm saying.

You're fucking bonkers if you think Mad Max beats AoU. No goddamn way.

Re: What will be no.1 at the B.O Avengers AOU weekend 3 or Mad Max FR opening weekend

Pitch Perfect 2 will be huge, the first movie was incredibly likable.

But it's also counter programming for Mad Max and Avengers and every other blockbuster. So the big question remains how huge AOU will be. I'm thinking $210m OW, $88m second weekend, $42m third weekend.

Pitch Perfect 2 will likely be in 1st with Avengers in 2nd and Mad Max in third.
