Focus (2015, D: Ficarra/Requa) S: Will Smith, Margot Robbie

A veteran grifter takes a young, attractive woman under his wing, but things get complicated when they become romantically involved.

Didn't see any threads for this...

Looks interesting enough I suppose. I'll probably check it out for Robbie.

Looks entertaining enough, I like Robbie and Smith so I'll undoubtably see it at some point.

I second that. I'm usually not drawn in by looks only, but she's a knockout.

Looks like Margot Robbie is on her way to be the new Jessica Chastain.

I guess no one here heard of or saw Robbie just 3 years ago on Pam Am on ABC. She was one of the leads.

Wasn't on anyone's radar until she did full frontal, daddy.

It had been so long since there was memorable good nudity in a big movie. She delivered.

She must be Sharon Stone's protégé.

Can anyone explain why this film is being released on IMAX screens? Just seems odd.

Because ticket prices are higher and they want to get more box office, would be my guess.

The movie was fine enough, but I think I spent more time staring at Robbie than paying attention to the story.

Ditto. Movie is entertaining, but overall pretty forgettable aside from the soundtrack and Robbie's beauty.

Re: Focus (2015, D: Ficarra/Requa) S: Will Smith, Margot Robbie

I thought this started off really strong. I liked the idea of a grifters working a circuit at major events. I've never seen anything like that depicted before. I thought it was interesting and would've like to see a movie about that. The scene with B.D. Wong was really well done. I thought they laid the seeds making you think Mellow had a gambling problem very well. I thought Smith did real well in that scene conveying the need to keep going. Again, I thought that is where the movie was going to go. An escalation that went to far now they need to get the money they lost back. But then...
Spoiler:
after the time jump... the movie just feel apart for me. It kind of became a romcom. The big con wasn't that interesting. The end twist felt kind of forced. I do wonder how those scenes with Mellow and his dad would play now after seeing the twist. There was some groundwork for a good film here, but overall didn't deliver fully for me.

It's worth a rental.

Margot Robbie is gorgeous. And Smith looks great for his age. There is a 20 year age difference between the two of them and it doesn't even really seem that way.

Re: Focus (2015, D: Ficarra/Requa) S: Will Smith, Margot Robbie

I saw this today and I agree with most of dex's comments. But, overall I enjoyed it. Yes, some parts didn't work, but I liked the plot overall and thought that Smith and Robbie worked really well together. There was some pretty clever writing & dialogue here. It's beautifully shot with good music too.

I admit I was fooled by the big fakeout at the Super Bowl: I also at this film not being able to get an NFL license. Using fake teams is just cheesy. I mean "The Rhinos"?

Spoiler:
With Nicky losing $1.1M to the Asian guy, I was thinking the movie would head in an entirely different direction with Nicky and Jess doing there grifting to try to recoup that money. I didn't see the fakeout that the whole thing was staged. I thought that was pretty clever and everything that led to that point.

For those who watch Longmire on A&E and now Netflix, Robert Taylor had a small part in this and actually spoke with his native Aussie accent. It's night and day how different he sounds compared to Walt Longmire.

The big twist at the end did feel kind of forced. I think the writers kind of ran out of steam trying to wrap up the movie in a clever way. They should have consulted the writers of Leverage on TNT.

Robbie is just stunning. I liked her when she was on Pan Am on ABC. She's going to be a big star in features in the years to come.

I'm a fan of Smith and I thought this was a worthy visit to the theater. For a guy who is pushing 50, he's in amazing shape. Still looks like the way he did during his hey day in the 90s. I'd give this movie a B or B-

Reminds me of Jaime Pressley when she was young.

Re: Focus (2015, D: Ficarra/Requa) S: Will Smith, Margot Robbie

Margot Robbie has great screen presence, she could be charismatic with a phone book, Will Smith seems to have lost it and frankly looked worn out the entire movie. Movie itself was fun, though some of the romantic stuff seem to strike the wrong tone and the time skip seemed to break it into two totally different movies. Grade: B.

Movie was more style than substance. I enjoyed the Wong scene too. He sold the intensity of the moment, but I got quite bored after the time jump as well.

Re: Focus (2015, D: Ficarra/Requa) S: Will Smith, Margot Robbie

yeah the movie definitely peaked with the Wong scene. I just got back from seeing it and I'm still trying to put all the pieces together. I still don't quite know what to make of it.

for instance:

Spoiler:
did Nicky's Dad aka Major Dad know Margot Robbie was in Nickys hotel room when he went in there and was searching around? And if so how did he know she was in there? Because if he didn't know, why was he still in character as the race club owners right hand man? What purpose did that scene serve?

I can be a bit dense at putting the pieces together.

Chadm I thought that this scene didn't make sense unless you took it that Major Dad was checking that the The Fresh Prince wasn't goofing off when he had lots of widgets to sell.

What threw me was that, given the presence of Major Dad, and the meticulous research that we were led to believe went into the big cons, how on earth did The Fresh Prince not know
Spoiler:
the actual situation with the Margot Robbie character?
