Unfriended (4/2015, D: Gabriadze) (Internet horror flick)
While video chatting one night, six high school friends receive a Skype message from a classmate who killed herself exactly one year ago. A first they think it's a prank, but when the girl starts revealing the friends' darkest secrets, they realize they are dealing with something out of this world, something that wants them dead.
Produced by Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted) and directed by Levan Gabriadze, Unfriended is told entirely through computer screens.

Ugh, that's not how this movie stuff works. That's not how any of this works.

I wish blocking shit like this from being made was as easy as blocking people who send me game requests.

Looks pretty lousy, and the found-footage subgenre is horribly tired, but I thought The Den was fantastic.

Short of Stanley Kubrick-level genius coming along, I think that the found footage genre, apart from essentially being exhausted from pretty much every angle, is pretty well played out. Yes, you have a small budget. Got it.

I'm sorta intrigued...
Only because I had a similar concept floating around my head a few years back when I was planning out a story.
...the only thing was my plan was to make like a small time youtube series, not a major motion picture, which I think would make more sense for this type of thing. It seems like a stupid idea to be sitting in a theater watching what is basically a computer screen re-created on a theater screen the entire time.
It's probably gonna suck.

Of course it'll suck. But people are stupid. How else do you explain movies like Vampires Suck, and all the recent Adam Sandler movies?

Shitty spoofs were popular 5 years ago, they thankfully seemed to have died off a bit. No excuse on the Adam Sandler movies, I don't have them as much as most people though, they're harmless and I liked Just Go With It.

Release week bump. This is getting good reviews so far. 85% on RT (11 out of 13 reviews).

I saw this at a WonderCon special screening and it is a fun movie. No, it's not found footage at all rather it takes place from one character's laptop screen. And it is in real time, so it is unique in that respect.
As far as scares, we weren't scared out of our wits but man some of the stuff was shocking. There are moments of dread but there are lot of clichéd moments. These made me and the rest of the audience laugh. It is still a pretty damn good time despite the flaws and groan inducing moments.
Before I got the invite to the screening, I did sit in on the Blumhouse panel:

The good reviews have me intrigued. But I don't know if I can handle watching a movie on the big screen that has a lot of Skype scenes.

Is this PG-13? Either way, the prospect of watching this in a packed theater full of the target audience scares me more than anything in the film ever could.

I hope my generation is punished for our self-indulgences. The damage we have done.... This is getting really good reviews. I'm interested, but I'm so, so, so tired of found footage stuff. It's at 88% on RT right now though. That's pretty impressive. Right or wrong, I see Blair Witch comparisons coming a mile away.
