Samurai has more themes, more breadth, and is more fun to watch. A couple of times I've put in the DVD just to watch a single scene, and I get sucked right in and stay for an hour. Kane is a technical marvel, but it's underlying bitterness makes it less fun.

I also prefer apples to oranges.

CK's underlying bitterness makes it a lot more enjoyable for me. Kurosawa crafted a great action film in many ways with SS, but Welles' shredding of Hearst seemed personal and still feels visceral. Imagine someone making something that good today...about Rupert Murdoch...it likely wouldn't even make theaters.

All that being said, I prefer The Magnificent Ambersons to both of them.

Tough one. Citizen Kane is purer cinematic perfection to me.

Re: Seven Samurai vs. Citizen Kane?

While I appreciate the technical merits of Citizen Kane, I've never been able to connect with it on any other level. So it's an easy choice for me: Seven Samurai.

Love both, but I go with Kane. One of my all time favorites and I am a huge Welles fan.

Re: Seven Samurai vs. Citizen Kane?

Too tough to choose. So I won't. Arguably, from an objective standpoint, the two greatest movies ever made. I've seen both on the big screen multiple times, on TV, on video, on DVD. I first saw both films (in theaters) when I was still in high school.

On July 21, 1973, I went to the New Yorker Theater to see a double bill of CITIZEN KANE and GRAND ILLUSION. On the subway ride home, I was reading the New York Post (afternoon edition) and came across the headline, buried in the Entertainment section, "Bruce Lee, Kung Fu Hero, Dead at 32."

Love both, but haven't seen in either in a number of years--would have to watch them both again to rank one over the other.

Re: Seven Samurai vs. Citizen Kane?

I guess I will be the dissenter. Although I can certainly appreciate both of these films on a technical level and as works of art, I honestly don't care for either film. I just don't get much enjoyment out of either but if I had to pick, I would go with Seven Samurai only because the subject matter is more in line with my interests.

Neither would make my personal Top 250 list of movies I like.

Citizen Kane is the better film, though both are amazing.

Seven Samurai is my favorite of the two though...

That's like asking if I love my first born son or second son more... won't choose either. But if I had to, I would still choose my wife.

Re: Seven Samurai vs. Citizen Kane?

Seven Samurai and it's not even close. CK, while a great movie, is just about a stupid fat rich guy. The class stuff in SS is far more interesting.

Re: Seven Samurai vs. Citizen Kane?

Even though Citizen Kane was born in my hometown (Herman Mankiewicz wrote the screenplay near my dad's house) I have to go with Samurai.....Although I think I've actually seen CK more times.
