The Martian -- 2015, D: Ridley Scott; S: Damon

Based on a novel by Andy Weir, the story concerns an astronaut who finds himself marooned on Mars, which forces NASA to improvise a rescue mission. The project has been pitched as "CAST AWAY Meets APOLLO 13", which makes me wonder if this could be an Oscar play for Scott and Damon. Goddard is officially off the project as a writer, too, which could mean the project's producer, Simon Kinberg, will step in to tailor the script to Scott's liking.

I'm down, this sounds good. I need to buy the book.

I thought this was only rumored due to Prometheus 2? Then again, I also read that Scott would only be a producer on Prometheus 2 and a new director would be drafted.

I think he may be choosing between the two right now. I don't have strong feelings either way, this one sounds cool...

Sort of spoilery information about the movie. Sounds pretty damn good. Read at your own risk: http://io9.com/sorry-interstellar-we...-an-1699793860

Great book. Hopefully a great movie too.
If you get a chance, you might want to look into the history of how the book was published too. Even that is an interesting story.

This would have starred Tom Hanks 15 years ago. The book is pretty much what happens when you combine Castaway with Apollo 13, but it was a really great adventure read... with SCIENCE!!

It's almost like an Interstellar spinoff.

I just now finished the book and loved it. (My eyes did glaze over some in the parts that got very mathy and sciency.
) It was surprisingly very funny. I hope the movie retains the humor. I don't really see Damon in the role, but I'm not ruling out him doing a good job with it, either.
Along those lines, I'm glad I was able to avoid all news about the casting so I could have my own mental image of the characters. I'll never forgive my friend for going against my wishes a few years ago and telling me who some of The Stand miniseries' actors were while I was reading the book. I couldn't shake thoughts of (terribly miscast) Parker Lewis. Grrrrr.
