Why do you choose not to go see a movie in the theatre?

Question says it all. What makes you choose to not see a movie at your local theatre?

I'll include a poll and make it multiple choices.

Re: Why do you choose not to go see a movie in the theatre?

Laziness, lack of time, movie theater crowds, prices, my home theater is very good, and after working for a movie theater for five years, I want to spend as little time in them as possible.

If it's a movie I'm really excited about, though, I'll go. Also theaters that play special programs, like older films and such, will get more of my business.

These, but the biggest one is the annoying pricks that patronize movie theaters.

Re: Why do you choose not to go see a movie in the theatre?

I see probably 4-5 movies a month in the theatre. At roughly $9 for a matinee, it is kind of expensive to see anymore than that, especially if you combine it with concessions and eating out. I will tend to see more during the summer when the big budget blockbusters, action movies come out.

Re: Why do you choose not to go see a movie in the theatre?

Ticket prices and finding a babysitter for my 3 kids (age 3 and under) are probably the 2 biggest reasons. Also, of course it depends on my interest in the movie. Certain movies I wouldn't go see if they were free. My time is worth more than that.

I do still enjoy seeing a good movie with a crowd though, I appreciate the theatrical experience. Usually when I do go, it's the 4.50 early matinee (before noon).

Not enough good movies. I actually enjoy going to the movies. I have a decent theater, actually a town over, that I go to almost every other weekend. But I rarely have an excuse to go. I'm not going to just go and see mediocre movies for the sake of going.

Re: Why do you choose not to go see a movie in the theatre?

Mostly because it's expensive (more of a problem for my wife than me) but one reason not mentioned is because of overall poor projection quality. I don't know if it's that I've gotten pickier as I've gotten older or if overall projection standards have just fallen so greatly, but so many of the movies I see in the theater are either too dim, not in focus, crooked, or spilling off of the screen. There are a couple of theaters locally that I know I will get a quality projection, but those are mostly for the big blockbusters. The theater that shows more of the indie/foreign stuff that I like has horrible quality, which sucks because I want to support theaters showing smaller films, but don't want to support the poor attention to quality.

Re: Why do you choose not to go see a movie in the theatre?

I tend to make it to the theater about once a week when they start putting out material that isn't "dumping stuff". However, I almost never go see comedies as they don't require a big screen for the effect.

Re: Why do you choose not to go see a movie in the theatre?

I usually stick to just seeing the big blockbusters that look best on the big screen (no matter how good your home theater is it still doesn't compare to the theater with certain "event" movies).

Otherwise unless I just can't wait for Blu-ray I stick to watching at home.

When we do go to the theater it's usually a matinee show in the middle of the week so the obnoxious crowds aren't much of a problem.

Re: Why do you choose not to go see a movie in the theatre?

If there is no movie cash offer, I usually don't go.

Unfortunately now I'm of the mindset that I must get something in addition for the price of admission, be it blu/dvd, breakfast cereal or pop tarts.

It's too pricey is the main reason. The next is I have a nice home theater.

Re: Why do you choose not to go see a movie in the theatre?

High prices for small screens is my main reason, also having to watch commercials that the theater is being paid to show after I've already paid to get in, and stupid people ruining the movie by talking or whatever. Developing less of a tolerance for the lights coming up during the end credits too, given the admission price.

I use Movie Pass so I do choose to go most of the time. But even before that, I'd go a lot and it's because I like the atmosphere.

Re: Why do you choose not to go see a movie in the theatre?

I like watching movies toes up on my couch without dealing with people around me talking, texting, and having kids run up and down aisles in a movie theater.

I rarely go to the theater. The last time I went was over three years ago.

Re: Why do you choose not to go see a movie in the theatre?

Normally I'm a regular, I see at least 2-3 dozen a year at the theater. However this year so far I've only gone out to see two movies: Zero Dark Thirty and Parker ($1 theater). Nothing has really appealed to me thus far.

I think Iron Man 3 and Stark Trek: Into Darkness are the next movies I can definitely see myself seeing at the theater. Maybe Oblivion, still not sold on it.

Re: Why do you choose not to go see a movie in the theatre?

I guess the biggest thing would be the movie. If it is simply a movie I'm not interested in, I am not going to spend the time to watch it, in a theater or in my home.

As for movies I am interested in, it becomes a matter of time, money, and planning. If it is $5 Tuesday (like today when I saw Stoker) and I have the time, I'll go see any movie I'm interested in.

But, the days of just going to the movies to see anything just to go to a movie ended after high school for me. I rather spend my $12 on a Blu-ray or not spend anything and pull a film off the unwatched pile.

I only make an effort to see Scorsese films on release day, but otherwise, I stay away from films on release day b/c of the crowds. I'm a matinee fan. Whatever minimizes the crowds/chance of having idiots using cell phones during the film.

Re: Why do you choose not to go see a movie in the theatre?

My only reasoning are the movies themselves. Maybe the theaters I have here are higher quality, but I never have major issues with the theater crowds, the cost is what it is, and I don't mind paying for food on occasion.

Hasn't been mentioned yet, but the usual window from theater to a DVD/Blu release. I can wait 3 additional months to watch it in my theater at home.

Re: Why do you choose not to go see a movie in the theatre?

I think people have gotten ruder over the years, when my we went to see Silver Linnings Playbook some woman was writing and email on her iPad mini or something a few rows below us. It was stadium seating so it was really distracting. Then the worst is these people who brought a baby into Skyfall that started crying. Now unless I really want to see it I wait it out for Netflix/Red Box.
