Cinemark to Reward Customers Who Don't Use Their Phones During Films

Direct link to the Cinemark app for iOS. Article source.

This is a sad sign of the times: The exhibition chain has decided it must give customers a special incentive to respect the movies, and each other. It unveiled today CineMode — a component within its iPhone and Android smartphone app — that can determine whether the owner uses the mobile device during a film, and send digital coupons to those who leave them alone. “It is important to develop tools that maximize and preserve the movie-going experience,” says Cinemark’s marketing and communications VP James Meredith. He adds that customers have asked the chain to “design an alternative and creative solution” to keep others from lighting up their phones in the dark theater. Before a film starts, Cinemark will flash a message on the movie screen urging customers to launch CineMode. The app will dim the smartphone’s screen and ask users to turn the volume off so incoming calls only cause the phone to vibrate. Customers must stay in CineMode throughout the film. If they do, then the company says it will automatically send a coupon to be stored in the app’s Rewards section. Exhibition execs are struggling to find a strategy to satisfy the growing number of patrons who won’t leave their phones alone in the theater, as well as those who want to preserve the traditional experience. Some have said they’d consider scheduling separate screenings of a film designating ones where texting would be allowed, and others where it wouldn’t.
My wife and I went to a Cinemark theater for the first time in years last night to see Fun Size and the CineMode advertisement played right after the trailers. Clearly, we had nobody playing with their phones as we were the only two in the theater...

I applaud Cinemark for being the first major exhibitor to take a jump in policing cell phone use during films. Hopefully the other chains will take a step in the right direction.

I think this is a really good idea. If I had a smartphone I would definitely utilize this app.

So those of us who turn our phones completely off get shafted?

Since the release of iOS 6, I've put my iPhone in Do Not Disturb mode when at the theater. I don't have to turn the phone off, but it completely stops any ringing or vibrations.

Whats next, giving gift certificates to people who will be quiet in a library.

I saw ads for this the last 2 films I saw, curious to what it was.

Thanks OP! I'll have to download this onto my iPhone now.

after my experience at Skyfall over the weekend, I'm all for anything that encourages good behavior at theaters. it's gotten out of hand now and I'm really tired of people treating every public space like they are in their own living room.

What would be great is if the app could play a special message for anyone that calls during the showing:

"Hello, I'm watching a movie in a theater. I don't want to be rude to my fellow moviegoers, so I can't use my phone to answer right now. Call me back in a little while and I may be available then. Brought to you by Cinemark!"

Hmm, I forgot about this...so it cuts out vibrations as well...I'll be using this tonight then.

While I still prefer the more strict policy of Alamo Drafthouse, this is a step in the right direction.

Unnecessary, since people don't go to libraries anymore.

Great idea I hope Regal picks up this practice.

Okay, so it's like giving parents rewards for picking up their kids' report cards.

Oh, wait...

People still go to libraries. They just check out DVDs and video games now instead of books...

Doesn't say what the coupon is for. Probably something like $1 off a large popcorn. They aren't going to discount tickets.

One addition: Once you launch CineMode, an assassin is sent to a loved one's house and waits. If you leave CineMode before the movie ends, your mother gets her throat cut.

Theaters make the majority of their profit from the food.

This is why I only go to reserved seating theaters. Considering you pay a premium per ticket you know damn well no one is going to start bullshitting on their phone. If they do, they're out.

Reading some of the reviews in the iPhone App Store for it, there were talks of a Free Frozen Drink, Free Popcorn and so on.

Just for the irony, download it while in a theater watching a movie.
