David Fincher goes to Kickstarter for his project 'Goon'.

Here is the KS:

He hasn't been able to find financing through traditional means, so filmmaker David Fincher has turned to crowdfunding site Kickstarter for money to develop an animated feature based on Eric Powell's comic "The Goon".
The project has been in development for several years with Fincher as executive producer while Tim Miller and Jeff Fowler would co-direct. There was even a proof of concept trailer developed sometime back which you can see on Vimeo.
However he hasn't been able to secure money for a cinematic take on the paranormal-themed quirky comic because the film would be at least a PG-13. These days financiers aren't keen to back animated movies that aren't all-ages family entertainment.

GOON FANS of the world, grab your beat sticks and chug some hooch... it's time to take on Hollywood!
That's right, this is your chance to help bring everyone's favorite zombie smasher to the big screen! For over 12 years, Eric Powell's comic book "The Goon" has thrilled readers around the globe with its fantastic world of mobsters, zombies, killer robots, giant fish-men, and every outrageous thing in between. The time has come to bring this great comic to theaters!
You might be asking yourself, "I've seen footage of The Goon animated film online... why do they need money? Isn't it already being made?"
The answer to that question is NO. The Goon Film has NEVER been in production. All the work you've seen (animation footage, trailers, artwork, etc.) has been produced independently and out-of-pocket by the creative team of David Fincher, Eric Powell, Blur Studio and Dark Horse Entertainment. We created "proof of concept" footage to show Hollywood the incredible potential of a Goon movie. It was very well received BUT because this movie isn't a sequel or filled with dancing animals we'll need more to bust open the gates and UNLEASH Goon and Franky on Hollywood. And by the freakishly barbarian strength of Aunt Kizzie, we'll find a way to succeed!

I think Ti West's response to this is best...
"Oh, cool. Oscar winning, multi millionaires, are now asking people for money on kickstarter."

I like Ti West, but if he were in that position, he'd do the same exact thing. It's business. Why use your own money when you can use other people's money? It's called leverage. I get where he's coming from, though.

No DVD? No producer credit? The stuff you get is lame.

I was just about to contribute, but then emailed the project coordinator asking if they would include a DVD or Blu-ray as part of the rewards and to encourage more people to contribute. I'm in standby mode for now.

Yeah, the rewards don't do it for me. $10 gets you nothing? How about at least include some Goon TPBs at some of the levels. $50 for a PDF copy of a book and blog access?
I hope this gets made, but I don't feel super motivated to contribute.

Meh..I like Fincher but the guy has more than enough money to back this on his own if he really wants to see it made. It isn't like he's some small time director or something.

These kinds of Kickstarters are such BS. If I'm fronting money for a profit-making venture, then I should be getting back-end residuals proportionate to my investment if and when the product shows profit.

Or usually you are essentially 'pre-ordering' but in this case since there is no movie reward, It is not even that case, but most KS you actually get the item that you are funding.

I think that's illegal, at least here in the states. I forget the legalities of it, but it is. That new movie 'Iron Sky' actually participated in a crowd funding project, but it was overseas and I don't know how those laws work.

I remember the trailer for this, and thought it was going to be a real movie already. Didn't realize it was just a proof of concept.
I'll pass on donating though, unless I get something useful in return.

It is a little strange seeing this from Fincher who I imagine has quite a bit of money, but I do like the idea of using Kickstarter to fund movies that might not be economically justifiable.
I also like the idea of using it to fund restorations/DVD releases that might not otherwise sell enough to justify the expense. See: The recent Portrait of Jason, Manos, and Herschell Gordon Lewis funds. I'm kind of passionate about film restoration/preservation, so those are the only Kickstarter funds I've ever actually donated to.
