They have a late night screening of this at the Portland International Film Festival later this month, I'm gonna try and check it out.

Yeah, I got the import blu-ray last year - pretty fun movie, from what I can remember...

Saw this tonight. There's action, but far, far less than the trailers advertise. The plot is mildly incomprehensible (possibly due to historical knowledge not common to a Westerner), even after seeing it and overall the film has a sense of humor that ranges from slapstick to tasteless (there's a rape that's sole purpose is for a few throwaway jokes in the wake). The cast keeps it entertaining, particularly Wen Jiang who barely upstages Chow Yun-Fat. I'd personally recommend waiting for DVD/Blu-Ray.

I enjoyed it quite a bit, and I thought Jiang Wen was great. I didn't think you needed to understand the historical context in order to enjoy it. Just be prepared for the over-the-top and slapstick elements.
