Aww hell no, Warner Bros to reboot Buffy the Vampire Slayer as Feature

per nikki finke and deadline
Atlas Entertainment is announcing today it is rebooting Buffy the Vampire Slayer, with Warner Bros Pictures. Atlas’ Charles Roven and Steve Alexander will produce the feature film alongside Doug Davison and Roy Lee of Vertigo EntertainmentBros. Whit Anderson is writing the script after he approached Roven and others with an idea how to update Buffy.
Warner Bros Pictures optioned the rights from creators Fran and Kaz Kuzui, and from Sandollar Productions (Sandy Gallin and Dolly Parton), for Atlas and Vertigo to produce. Buffy the Vampire Slayer first appeared as a film in 1992, subsequently becoming a cult hit and spawning the TV series starring Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz. Whit Anderson is represented by CAA, Wirehouse Entertainment and Julian Zajfen at Ziffren, Brittenham, Branca, Fischer, Gilbert-Lurie & Stifflemen.

Re: Aww hell no, Warner Bros to reboot Buffy the Vampire Slayer as Feature

I don't see the point really. I remember enjoying the original movie when I was a kid, but I was a kid. Never really cared for the TV Series (it had some good moments but generally just didn't do it for me).

They know most of the TV fans are Whedon fans (something I'll never grasp), weird they seemed to have side stepped him completely.

So who is this Whit Anderson lady?

Meh. Thought the first movie was kinda fun, hated the series.

Based on your thread title, I thought they offered it to Will Smith.

I think it's a great idea. The original movie was fun, but neither it nor the TV series really "got" the character. Hopefully the new movie will correct that.

argh (per E Online)

"There is an active fan base eagerly awaiting this character's return to the big screen," says Charles Roven, who will be producing the feature film through Warners and Atlas Entertainment. "Details of the film are being kept under wraps, but I can say while this is not your high-school Buffy, she'll be just as witty, tough, and sexy as we all remember her to be."

Who is Whit Anderson? Apparently a huge Buffy fan who pitched Roven the idea, and the deal was made: Warner Bros. Pictures optioned the rights from creators Fran and Kaz Kuzui, and from Sandollar Productions (Sandy Gallin and Dolly Parton), who did the original movie version (pre-TV's Buffy). Roven and Alexander are behind films such as Dark Knight and Get Smart, plus TV's sadly demised Rubicon; Davison and Lee worked on How to Train Your Dragon and quite a few horror films.

Without Joss Whedon? Why? And the show only went off the air seven years ago. Is it time to reboot Harry Potter but with new creative talent?

Huh? The TV series never "got" the character? The TV series defined the character.

You know, I saw the phrase "relevant to today" with regard to another proposed reboot/remake project sometime last week. I read that for either of these and think - who are these people to spout off such random statements? Buffy hasn't been off the air for 10 years and in addition to that is continuing on through other medium (e.g. TPB). How is that material suddenly not relevant? How is "today" so different from "then" (less than 10 years ago) that you need to put a "new" and "fresh" take on the material.

Is it any more ridiculous than redoing Spider-Man already?

Lame.

I'd be excited to see a big-screen continuation of the TV series, but a reboot? Without Joss Whedon? I won't even acknowledge its existence.

I know that the Kuzui's were the producers of the original movie and most likely own the rights to the character...but is it really fair to call them the creators? I thought Whedon created Buffy.

However, they have been taking about a remake for years. It sounds like they're closer this time than in the past, so it will be interesting to see if it actually happens this time. I'll probably wait for a rental though, if Joss isn't involved. It just won't be the same without him.

Re: Aww hell no, Warner Bros to reboot Buffy the Vampire Slayer as Feature

On May 25, 2009, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Roy Lee and Doug Davison of Vertigo Entertainment were working with Fran Rubel Kuzui and Kaz Kuzui on a re-envisioning or relaunch of the Buffy movie for the big screen. The movie would not be a sequel or prequel to the existing film or television franchise and Joss Whedon would have no involvement in the project. None of the characters, cast, or crew from the television series would be featured. [6] Television series executive producer Marti Noxon later reflected that this story might have been produced by the studio in order to frighten Whedon into taking the reins of the project.[7]
Wonder if this is more of the same

When I am king I will ban the phrase 'reboot' for anything less than 30 years old.

Exactly. TV Buffy IS Buffy as far as I am concerned. Have absolutely ZERO interest in this if Joss is not involved.

Maybe Nathan Fillion could play Buffy!

Someone with 3 minor acting credits and no prior writing credits. I wonder if she's going to try and push her way into getting the role of Buffy too...

Not fair really. They had zero input into the series (unlike most producers who at the very least contribute something). It'd be more accurate to call them financiers really...

And I also don't quite get the "never quite got the character" comment. Did Buffy exist in some other medium before the movie for you? And technically, the Buffy character was based off the original script of the movie, not the movie itself. That is why the movie and show share very little together.

Movie was fun. Series sucked. I'd be game for a remake.
Well, assuming this Whit Anderson person knows how to write a fun script. Never heard of him - err - her.

As long as they keep Joss "Struck by Lightning" Whedon away from this, I'm all for it.
