Yeah the series never lived up to the potential of the original, vastly underrated movie. I'd like to see what a real filmmaker could do: with a smart script, great casting, actually SCARY motion-capture CGI vampires and proper utilization of 3D, one could make for a totally kickass vampire movie.
I'd even want Kristy Swanson back in the role!

Have you read what Joss has been doing with 'season 8' in the comics? No matter how terrible this remake may turn out to be, it can't possibly be worse than that.

I thought that was basically for "rights" reasons?
That said, this is dumb. The series wrapped up just fine, and no one is asking for a remake. For the most part, Buffy fans already have a whole lot of series to watch, and non-fans don't care about the character anyway.

"filmmakers claim the movie would not revisit the vampire slayer’s high school days, attempting instead to capture the “witty, tough, and sexy” heroine in a new way"
My initial fear was they would be turning this into a Twilight ripoff. Now I'm afraid they're going to turn it into a Underworld ripoff.

Clearly they're trying to cash in on the current vampire fad.
I'm going to get banned for this but I'm happy Joss Whedon isn't involved. I'm a big fan of the original movie. It's dated by now but it's still a fun movie. I can see myself enjoying a reboot if it's done right.

per E news online
Kristin, I'm glad you asked for my thoughts on the announcement of Buffy the cinema film. This is a sad, sad reflection on our times, when people must feed off the carcasses of beloved stories from their youths--just because they can't think of an original idea of their own, like I did with my Avengers idea that I made up myself.
Obviously I have strong, mixed emotions about something like this. My first reaction upon hearing who was writing it was, "Whit Stillman AND Wes Anderson? This is gonna be the most sardonically adorable movie EVER." Apparently I was misinformed. Then I thought, "I'll make a mint! This is worth more than all my Toy Story residuals combined!" Apparently I am seldom informed of anything. And possibly a little slow. But seriously, are vampires even popular any more?
I always hoped that Buffy would live on even after my death. But, you know, AFTER. I don't love the idea of my creation in other hands, but I'm also well aware that many more hands than mine went into making that show what it was. And there is no legal grounds for doing anything other than sighing audibly. I can't wish people who are passionate about my little myth ill. I can, however, take this time to announce that I'm making a Batman movie. Because there's a franchise that truly needs updating. So look for The Dark Knight Rises Way Earlier Than That Other One And Also More Cheaply And In Toronto, rebooting into a theater near you.
Leave me to my pain! Sincerely, Joss Whedon.

To all of those shitting on Joss Whedon, here's to you:
The better question is how do you reboot a franchise when alienating the fanbase? The fans want to see a Whedon-controlled project and not the cinematic equivalent of a partial birth abortion.
Without the fans (or with the fans being very vocal about their disgust), who do you have to actually see the film? The few people who actually saw (and enjoyed) the early-90s movie? Teenage girls who will be past the Twilight stage when this film actually makes it's way to theaters? This project just reeks of DOA.
I can shit all over this project, but I'm sure that this will never make its way to theaters and will just languish in development hell (where it deserves to sit).

I would wager that those characters, and everything else unique to the television show, are owned by Fox. And what the Kuzuis proabably did was license out the original movie to Warners for a remake/re-envisioning. I doubt Warners would want to cut a deal with Fox to use their characters and concepts.

edgy dvdtalk posters: "I don't want another tired, cliche, vampire movie (a remake no less). Oh wait, it specifically doesn't include Joss Whedon. Now I magically love it!"

I hope this gets made. Seeing all the Whedonites crying on the internet's going to be worth the price of admission.

Making a movie that ignores everything he did is, quite simply, stupid. They would easily make more money by including him and the rest of the cast, most of whom are pretty available. To not do that seems like a slap in the face of the fans who would actually support that movie over this one.

I am not surprised that some people prefer the Buffy movie to TV show. Much like the people who think the Highlander movies are better then Highlander TV show; everyone has the right to have horrible taste and we should show kindness and attempt to mask our pity with little happy faces.

Like him or not, the only reason a Buffy remake would happen is because of Joss Whedon. That's a simple fact. He gave that property all of its value.
