what i mean by "off-the-grid" is a movie with very little hype or attention, maybe not even a theatrical release, very limited release or perhaps only home video. one that took you by surprise and were delightfully pleased.



Tyler Foster gave this a DVD Talk Collector Series rating so naturally i was intrigued. pleasantly surprised that it was instant watch from Netflix, put it on the other night and really enjoyed it. Emma Caulfield of Buffy and original 90210 gave a very sweet, endearingly likable performance. the story was different and inventive and supporting cast was equally good. very good rom-com with a twist.

I wound up really enjoying City Island. Though I guess that one had moderate attention thanks to its cast (Andy Garcia, Julianna Margulies, Emily Mortimer, Alan Arkin)

Pass.Pass.

just got that from Netflix today and am looking forward to it.

These aren't exactly off the grid by your definition, but neither are they mainstream releases. Both are superb.

I was recently pleasantly surprised by this:

forgot i instantly watched this as well from Netflix. excellent little spook tale. very compentently executed thriller that truly leaves you guessing and many excellent wtf moments throughout that comes to fruition with a nice, highly enjoyable ending that haunts/stays with you. to say anymore would give it away, but if you liked or loved (and if you don't want it truly spoiled don't click the spoiler tab) like i did, which in retrospect i thought it heavily borrowed from, you should really enjoy this gem.

That other movie is pretty a spoiler for Triangle, and vice versa. Once you've seen one it doesn't take long to guess the "twist" in the other.

I liked Triangle as well, it was annoying in parts but in general a fun slasher flick.

My comment in post #8 "supplemented" yours, it wasn't meant to be negative...just additional info.

Caught this over the weekend from Redbox, and enjoyed it.



Pretty damn predictable, for sure, but Emily Watson and Ralph Fiennes are great in it. Also, the three actors who play the best friends are worth watching for, too.

read it. sounds real good. think i also saw a great review on At the Movies which is why it was on my radar. took out The Good, the Bad, the Weird, will save for another time, and hope to see this one tonight.

Being that me & GenPion are the only 2 people here that seemed to have seen this . . .

no, no...i Netflix'd this the other week. very good! i wouldn't compare it to The Godfather, but very well put together, though not entirely epic crime story.

I saw it too and was a little disappointed. It was a decent film, but I was expecting more based on all the great reviews and awards/nominations it received.

'Ink' was the first thing that came to mind. This would qualify as 'off the grid' more than any movie I'm aware of. Torrents were actually the marketing for the film. I did a thread on it recently:

'Valhalla Rising' is one of them. That poster isn't large enough Arminus.

Since 'A Prophet' was a huge international deal, I don't think it really qualifies as 'off the grid', but I saw it like 6 months ago and it was very good.

'The Army of Crime' is another one, it's in the style of Melville's 'Army of Shadows' and it was a virtually invisible film in the US. At least from my perspective.

Loved 'Triangle'.

I was going to list Redbelt, but I think it got some generally good hype thru word of mouth.
