Saw 3D

Seeing as how this is (supposedly) the final film and all, I figure it should have it's own proper thread.

Release date: Oct. 29, 2010

Re: Saw 3D

I'm a fan of the Saw series, but I find it difficult to believe that this is the final movie in the series. There may not be a Saw VIII next year, but I don't think we have seen the last of the series.

Re: Saw 3D

I keep reading it as "Sawed" and I wonder if that's intentional?

Four was the last Saw movie I saw in the theatres and it was dreadful. I made it halfway through 5 and never came back to it. But I have been meaning to rewatch them anyway and I heard 6 is somewhat decent.

I think I'm in the minority, but I like 3 the best. It feels like the most shameless of them all, just set piece to set piece and really seems to know what it is without trying to be much more beyond the gore. Plus fat Robert the Bruce! I really lost respect for that dude...

Re: Saw 3D

The studio has pushed the seventh film back to October 29.
Also:

"It's time to stop," says Oren Koules, a producer on all the Saw movies, in an interview with USA Today. "We have told the story we wanted to tell, and this is going to be a great farewell."

Re: Saw 3D

^But if Saw 3D makes a lot of money, I'll bet the studio will reconsider making another movie in the series.

I doubt they expect it to do any higher than $60-70m, so unless it pulls in over $100m I don't see them reconsidering. I'd also wager that they've concocted a definitive, succinct ending to the series based on what I've read thus far.

That being said, I figure if they do try to squeeze any more life out of this series it'll be DTV.

Re: Saw 3D

Well the last one only made 27 million, half as much as V, so I'm sure expectations aren't as high as 60-70 million for this.

I don't think they'll rush to make another one for next year, but I can easily see someone coming back to make more in 2 or 3 years.

Re: Saw 3D

It'll get rebooted in about, oh... 3-4 years?

(Actually, I wouldn't be that surprised...)

Good point about Saw VIII and any future Saw movies being DTV, as isn't that what happened with the next Hostel movie?

Yes, Hostel 3 is set to go DTV. And I'm sure we all know how awesome it'll be...

Re: Saw 3D

Originally, the game plan was to make it all the way to Saw VIII. However, after the disappointing box office gross of VI and the even more disappointing BD/DVD sales just three months later, Lionsgate has reconsidered the plan.

I know I'm in the minority, but I'm looking forward to Saw 3D after the "redemeption" of the franchise that was the last entry. I'm hoping the crew end the series on a high note rather than ending it leaving limping. Saw VI was able to finally answer some questions, so let's hope this one answers the remaining ones.

And, for any other DVD Talk thread sake, let me end up ranking the franchise for where I seem fit right now...

1. II
2. VI
3. III
4. I
5. IV
6. V

I, for one, will not be watching Hostel 3 after the shitstorm that was Hostel: Part II.

Man in not the biggest 3D fan but Saw in 3D if shot that way could be really fun.

Re: Saw 3D

Saw 3D is surprisingly one of the only few movies this year actually shot in 3D.

Jackass too. Both of which I'm pumped to see, thankfully.

Re: Saw 3D

I'll admit, as many bad decisions that have been made with this series, I still look forward to each entry. I'm especially pumped for this one thanks to actual 3D and the return of a certain character.

Re: Saw 3D

I gave up on Saw a few sequels ago, but that's a pretty sweet poster.

Re: Saw 3D

Shit, I didn't even know that! In that case I'll shift my praise to the PS3 ad. And here I thought the Saw guys finally got past the dismembered body parts adding up to the current sequel number.

Re: Saw 3D

Will definitely see this come October. I'm still amazed that Tobin Bell's character has been dead for 3 movies, yet they still manage to concoct flashbacks/hidden videos to keep him around.

I was really disappointed to see Saw VI flop so hard as I thought it was the best film of the series since Part II.

Re: Saw 3D

I'm a huge fan of the series, but I'm not a fan of 3D at all. I just hope the 3D doesn't make ruin the home viewing on Blu-Ray.

SAW VI had a been there, done that vibe going on. William=Jeff, Hoffman had been followed in the previous movie, etc. There wasn't much that was new. It might have been well put together, but it lacked originality imo.

Originally, Wan and Whannell's original idea for Saw III was to bring back Dr. Gordon and his wife for another game rather than what ended up being Jeff and his wife. Going back to your issue, I don't necessarily think that it was a "been there, done that" approach to the material when it came to VI; Jeff was there to seek vengeance on those who killed his son and William was there as he denied people their chance at life. The only thing that makes the films feel similar is how the game is laid out. If you think VI feels too similar to III, then by that logic, V feels too similar to II and everything really has just been a poor imitation of the first film.

[However, I wish V had a "been there, done that" approach to II; it probably would've made that entry more bearable.]

I, also, liked how they made VI topical. Others disagree, but I thought it was a nice twist on things.
