Criterion Film Club (March 1) - Salò

The DVDTalk Criterion Film Club selection for the first half of March was chosen by NycFilmGuy84:

Salò (1975)

Synopsis:
Spoiler:
Pier Paolo Pasolini’s notorious final film, Salò, or The 120 Days of Sodom, has been called nauseating, shocking, depraved, pornographic . . . it’s also a masterpiece. The controversial poet, novelist, and filmmaker’s transposition of the Marquis de Sade’s eighteenth-century opus of torture and degradation to 1944 Fascist Italy remains one of the most passionately debated films of all time, a thought-provoking inquiry into the political, social, and sexual dynamics that define the world we live in.

I really don't know what to say about this movie other than it was just so totally fucked. I hope this thread gets some action because I would love to hear others thoughts on it.
It wasn't nearly as shocking or disturbing as I expected from all I had heard about it, but more of just WTF stuff (like all the shit eating).
The 4 men were some truly demented individuals, but that crosseyed dude is one of the creepiest characters I have ever come across in a movie.

Not as shocking as I expected, but still quite messed up. I guess I get what the director was going for, comparing their atrocities with those of the Nazis, but I don't know.

I'm open to re-thinking the film someday, but not feeling it right now.
