Nicolas Cage in Superman Lives - Has to be seen to be believed

As seen from the picture, shit canning the flick was a good idea after all. Apparently Burton wanted to make a Superman that doesn't fly wore a rubber suit and had Jesus hair. Along with John Peter's idea for the film that was reveled in "An Evening with Kevin Smith" this was definitely a crisis averted. Full article below.

Well established pic is a fake. It's clearly an action figure and the Photochop work couldn't be more obvious around the neck.

The YouTube video I saw of this did have Burton sketches in it. Maybe those are old, but those were, to me, as distressing as that picture might have been if it were real.

Couldn't have come out any worse than Superman Returns.

You mean this video?

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/vfcJc7j_A3Y&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xcfcfcf&hl=en&feature=player_embedded&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/vfcJc7j_A3Y&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xcfcfcf&hl=en&feature=player_embedded&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Well, if you recall, Burton has said that he basically wanted Superman to wear the Edward Scissorhands costume throughout the bulk of the movie. Only during the last 15 minutes was he to wear the actual Superman costume. However, he wanted to create a weird and twisted version of said costume that was to be dark blue and blood red. I also recall that he wanted Superman to have an alien looking face as well.

I honestly don't know how he even passed the pitch phase.

Yes, indeed, that video. I like several of Tim Burton's movies, but...really?

They should case Holly Hunter as Lois Lane and have both basically play their Raising Arizona characters in Metropolis. That movie I would watch.

what's wrong with trying something different/out there.. superman returns was a throwaway , I would've rather seen Burton's take on it than that

I'm not. I was commenting on what are clearly genuine (and awful) Burton sketches in a video that ends with the shopped pic.

Re: Nicolas Cage in Superman Lives - Has to be seen to be believed

Just playing devil's advocate here, since I don't know much on the subject, but is it possible that Tim Burton himself did that photoshop in kind of a rush job to get his ideas across for what he wanted Superman to look like?

By the way, this seems to be that giant spider Kevin Smith was talking about, posted below. Don't know if it's been posted before, but whatever. Like I said, I don't know much about this except the small amount I've read here. When this first came up a while back, I kind of saw the words Superman and Nicholas Cage associated, and I was pretty repulsed by that alone, so I didn't pay too much attention after that.

Re: Nicolas Cage in Superman Lives - Has to be seen to be believed

I think Burton's idea of Superman would only work if he were making a movie about Bizzaro. In fact, that's who those sketches remind me of. Although Superman Returns was a redundant snoozefest, Burton was more out of touch with the character than Singer.

Superman isn't Batman. He isn't dark or brooding. He also isn't weird (like the Question) or disturbing (like, I dunno, Deadman? Has he ever been disturbing? Beyond the whole being dead and possesing people things, I mean.). The guy is an all American gosh darn beacon of hope kinda guy. Kal-El Scissorhands was a stupid idea. J.J. Abrams' "My name is Neo - err - Clark Kent" Superman was a stupid idea. (Especially when Earth mourns its greatest champion who'd only been active a whole week before he died and then is later nagged back to life by his father. Seriosly, Jor-El had to kill himself and then bitch and moan at Superman to convince him to ressurect himself. And apparently he's the only Kryptonian with said self-ressurection abilities.) Brian Singer wisely chose to go back to basics. Sadly, he also chose to stay there and only offered the "innovation" of Superman being a deadbeat dad and a stalker.

For better or worse, Brian Singer's idea was the least sucky idea.
