Re: Your Top 10 Favorite Directors
Living directors? That cuts it down quite a bit. Let's see:
Hayao Miyazaki
John Woo
Walter Hill
Quentin Tarantino
Satoshi Kon
Mamoru Oshii
Rintaro
Tsui Hark
Yuen Wo Ping
Lau Kar Leung
15 years ago, I would have put down Scorsese, Oliver Stone, and Spike Lee. But the train done left the station on those cats long ago. I'm shaky on Woo and Hill since neither has done anything worthwhile in a long time, but I had to put some "Hollywood" directors on the list, didn't I? Aside from Tarantino, who's getting shakier and shakier with each new release, too.
In fact, none of these cats has made a decent film in the last five years and most haven't made one in the last 10-to-15 years!
But I can't put the director of PUNISHER WAR ZONE down because she's only made one film that I've seen. You gotta do more than that to get on a favorite directors list.
Favorite non-living directors (although their films will always live on), just to keep it real:
John Ford
Orson Welles
Akira Kurosawa
Yasujiro Ozu
Chang Cheh
Ishiro Honda
Robert Aldrich
Sam Peckinpah
Sergio Leone
Anthony Mann
Hayao Miyazaki
John Woo
Walter Hill
Quentin Tarantino
Satoshi Kon
Mamoru Oshii
Rintaro
Tsui Hark
Yuen Wo Ping
Lau Kar Leung

If it was all-time directors I would have to include: Hitchcock, Welles, Huston, Leone, Kurosawa, and Ford and knock six of the above off my list.
