Adventureland (Mottola, 2009)
Synopsis:
Trailer
The film, set in the summer of 1987, concerns an uptight recent college grad who is forced to take a minimum wage job at the local amusement park after realizing he can't afford his dream European tour. The experience helps him to loosen up a bit as he finds first love, forms new friendships and matures just in time to enter the real world in the fall.

If this is rated R, it really needs a red band trailer.
It feels like a mix between Superbad and Wet Hot American Summer, but you know, without the funny.

Looks like it's going to Sundance ...
QuietEarth.US - More Sundance goodies, heres the genre stuff
* "Adventureland," directed and written by Greg Mottola, stars Kristen Stewart, Ryan Reynolds and Bill Hader in the story of a college grad who gets a job at an amusement park. A Miramax release.

I loved the red band trailer. Really looking forward to this one. Personally I can't stand Cera's terrible acting, so I'm more than willing to give this kid a shot. Hader, Starr and Reynolds all were great in the trailers I saw.

doesn't look like anything special. almost like i've seen this stuff before and Ryan Reynolds looks just so out of place.

Any other Long Islander's here? There's an amusement park here named Adventureland. It's a small piece of crap but if you grew up on LI chances are you've spent a fair amount of your youth at Adventureland. I doubt there's any real connection (I'd check but I can't access the trailer or IMDB at work). I may watch the movie soley because of the name.

Nothing in the trailer really seemed '1987' to me... seems like another supposedly retro movie that tries to play off nostalgia by throwing in a few vaguely 80s touches, with no care as to what part of the decade they are actually sampling from. It's like a 2009 teenager's idea of what the 80s were like.

I really want to see this movie. It got an awesome review that I read on CHUD, giving the movie a 9 out of 10. That is pretty impressive.

I saw an advanced screening. It is a good movie. I went into it expecting VERY little, as the trailer left me underwhelmed, but I was pleasantly surprised.
I for one, am glad they did not cast Cera in the role; I honestly don't think he would have fit the role and the tone of the movie. It is indeed a comedy, but there is a lot of 'drama' as well.
The cast works well together: Eisenberg, Starr, Hader, and Reynolds are all excellent. Stewart is the weakest link for sure, but doesn't drag it down too much.
I went in expecting a knock-off of Superbad, etc. and ended up finding a more serious and driven movie than I had expected. If you get a chance to check it out, I suggest you do.
