American Idol Inadvertently Allows Contestant Popularity to Be Leaked

Short version: because iTunes tracks downloads, it's possible to see how popular certain contestants really are.

Interesting. I thought I read they wouldn't let iTunes show the contestants' popularity but I guess not.

But if that list were truly reflective of the votes, Colton Berry would still be on the show, and Chikeze would have been bounced last week.

It has to do with the songs too - I like Kady, but I don't like "Groovy kind of Love"

Who ever said it was supposed to be exact? Or did you think everyone that places votes also happens to be downloading these songs on itunes? It is what it is- a general barometer of the popularity of the contestants based on the first performance. Is it not still more or less fairly accurate?

It's pretty reflective of their general popularity, not as an exact measure of votes.

The fact that the no. 1 thing on the list is the song medley of them all, really scares me...

Some of it is song choice, some of it is contestant charisma and personality, and lot of it is actual performance (most of the songs in the bottom half on the chart were poorly performed).

Another difference here is the fact the songs are 99 cents versus free phone calling where some crazies call hundreds of times for their favorites.

Uh, yeah. That and the fact that a lot of people who vote on the phone probably don't even have an iPod. This thing isn't even supposed to be anything other than a very general gauge of the popularity of the contestants. It's no different than some informal survey. I don't know why some here are seeing it in such a literal, matter of fact manner.

Exactly. While people may download certain artists from the show more than others, doesn't exactly translate to people that vote. There's certainly a large crossover, but as you can see, it's not the same as the voting tallies.
