PS3 80GB Discontinued?
I just called my local SonyStyle store to inquire about picking up an 80GB PS3. The young man told me they were out and that the 80GB was now a dicontinued model. He had no news of a replacement model either.
Has anyone else heard of this?

I first saw this over at Engadget:

I believe a new (white) model will come out at the end of the year (120gb, if i'm not mistaken).

High cost to make coupled with very low sales. Sony lost the video game war in hopes of winning the hi-def movie war. The Wii and 360 simply destroy it. If they stripped out Blu-ray, it would be over for them completely.

Very True...So let's recap.....Sony released, a 20-DC'd 60-DC'd, then the 80&40 models.. *80 now being replaced with 120gig probably to compete with the xbox elite. What will they think of next. Wii is still rolling in the cash and they've only got one little system that seems to be a nice bang for the buck. I'm sticking with my 80.

WOW!
A White PS3? With Gold Chrome-ish accents? Sounds very 2001-ish to me!
(Could be kinda cool though, I mean, if your pad has a similar white-shag-carpet style theme thang goin' on.
)

The 360 is a far superior gaming system at this time. All of my game purchases that are released on both systems will be on the 360 and I do not believe I am alone in this.

The funny thing about your comment is... its true.

I've actually purchase a couple games for the PS3 for the simple fact of not wanting to leave her out of the gaming arena.
So So sad, but true.

Don't mean to dash any dreams but while Sony has stayed mum on a 120GB they have clearly denied rumors that suggested a white US console. I think that's still a ways away (when they can convince people to rebuy the 120GB by changing the colour).

Like an inferior version of DMC4. It seems 360 is getting the ports now. unreal tournament port. DM4 port, Dark Sector port, and RE:5 port. tides turning. 2008 will be dominated by the PS3. too many massive exclusives. The great press lately tends to agree.

PS3 has got some decent games coming, but most of those games will be cross platform. Aside from MGS, (and don't give me the FF rhetoric, that will not ship in 2008) what games are you talking about?
Sony has a huge hill to climb.

When Sony's "home" comes out soon, then the xbox will have some serious competition.
I have a 360 and a PS3. XBOX Live is great and it has developed quite an online gaming community. You get "achievements" for working through games and it builds up your "gamer score" to show the other gamers what you have accomplished when they look at your gamer profile. It's kind of like getting badges in boy scouts. It's a way to show other gamers that you can accomplish very hard in game challenges. It also builds a kind of friendly competition between gamers to try and be the first one to get an achievement.. It's a great setup and very intelligent on Microsft's part. The situation right now is that it costs $49.99 per year to be a part of it... That doesn't include a game or the console. Sony has been working on their version of XBOX Live called "SONY Home". It's about to launch very soon. The difference is that it will compete with XBOX live and it will be completely FREE. Yes, FREE to ANYONE who has a PS3. They have been working on it for a few years perfecting it and telling the general public that it is coming. Well now the days are getting closer and closer. To compete with the xbox Live's "achievements" Sony has "Trophy's". Which will work much in the same way as xbox live's gamer score except Sony has promised some surprises and said that it will have a better system of medals and trophies for gamers.
Yes, in the past and right now I would rather play a game on the 360 (if it's on both PS3 and 360) in order to get the achievements for my gamerscore. BUT........ When Sony's HOME comes out.... I will definitely consider getting the PS3 version over the 360. So don't count Sony out of the gaming game quite yet... A free version of Sony HOME is coming and will definitely compete with Microsoft xbox live. Sony has been the top company in gaming before so they know what they are doing. I personally like the PS3 console much better than the 360. The 360 is cheaply made and breaks way too often. It feels cheap and flimsy compared to the PS3 which does not use a tray to insert your disk. I do like the 360's controller much better than the PS3's. Also, keep in mind that the PS3 is a more powerful machine and 1 year newer than the 360. Think about this, how far does technology come in one year on computers? Same thing with gaming consoles. The PS3 is a better computer. The PS3 has a much better "engine" under the hood. The potential is there. It's up to the game designers to utilize that more powerful engine and make games that will reach the capbilities of the PS3. Soon you will see games on the PS3 that will show that the 360 is dated. All this is coming from a gamer with an 11,580 gamer score on XBOX Live. I'm also a level 45 Brigadier in Halo 3 (highest level possible is level 50 General, which is nearly impossible to reach unless you play games as good as Michael Jordon played basketball)
Sony's HOME is coming, and it's FREE ...... then we shall see what happens....
