Alright, so I know I don't have the most amazing collection in the world, and I would like more classic stuff and Criterions, but it's simply easier to grab cheap movies, and the best movies are rarely cheap. That being said...

I went to a friend of a friends house tonight to check out his movies, and they were just abysmal by my standards. I can't even remember them. The ones that stuck out as good in my mind were dodgeball, and King of the Hill Season 1. Yeah, those were the GOOD ones.

The guy had mostly VHS; in fact, of about probably 100 movies, he had maybe 10 dvd's. So looking for a movie was really tough to begin with.

Secondly, they were mostly what I consider pretty campy. Most of what I saw was average at best. We ended up watching What's Eating Gilbert Grape, and I got to change his dvd settings to 16x9. VERY satisfying, since it was showing huge black bars and looked way stretched. He just bought a new hd-dvd, and so I just had to step in; was hard to do it without sounding snobbish though.

Next time I go, I'm making some notes or taking pictures or something. Was really looking forward to making a new friend with which to compare notes.

Anyway, anyone here ever see someone's movies and just want to say, "Let's look at mine instead..."?

Do you care what people think of your collection?

If anything, I'm ashamed when I look at my own collection and see how many more DVD's I have than almost everyone I know. I'm coming to the realization that the whole collecting thing isn't really necessary.

It's pretty shameful to judge another person's taste in anything, especially a friend. Who are you or I to tell a person what to collect?

I will say, anytime I go to someone's house for the first time, I will browse the movie collection. You can tell a lot my someones taste in movies

No. People buy what they like, why should I care what they have? I don't care what people think of my collection, why should I look down upon other's?

Why would I care what someone else owns?

I might give a buddy of mine a little grief if they've got a really terrible movie sitting in their racks (hell, I get plenty of it for enjoying Bedazzled - and yes, I mean the Ramis / Fraser version), but never would I feel "ashamed" of a friend's collection. What if he has a slicker set of wheels than you have ... how would you feel if he felt ashamed of your ride?

Different things get people from Point A to Point B at their own speed and enjoyment.

I suppose 'ashamed' was the wrong word. I just went to this guys house tonight and had been told he had a fair amount of movies, and was excited to meet another person that liked film. I found when I arrived that I had little to no interest in what he owned. I don't dislike this person or think less of him, but I find it VERY hard to believe no one here takes pride in their own collection and taste and never considers another persons and compares. Why the hell does everyone have links to their collections in their sigs? And why wasn't any of this said in the "rate the member above you thread?" I guess that's not judging, that's rating. Sorry to create an awful thread, and I'll know not to try to start a conversation here again since apparently I'm terrible at it.

No, and mostly because none of my friends have any dvd collection to speak of - except for one, and he pretty much has all the same stuff I do...

I steered clear of that thread as I had no interest in telling someone their collection sucked because they had different tastes than me, or that it was great as they had similar tastes.

How about I change the title to what I feel was the intent of the topic since I think most people saw me shaming everyone and decided to just jump in and tell me off.

Awesome. I'm in the "Sick F*ck" Club too! We should have regular meetings. I think I joined that club when I showed some friends my Meet the Feebles bootleg VHS 'bout ten years ago.

But, yes, I do tend to peruse a collection when I'm in someone's house for the first time. If they have books, I study the books. If they have movies, I assess the DVDs. These are important things to know. With friends, they're already friends so I'm not building resumes for or against them. But new people, they must audition, and the most telling entry on their resume, sometimes, is whether or not they own a film by Uwe Boll.

I have a close friend who saw "Biker Boys," "Kangaroo Jack," "Honey" and "Connie and Carla" consecutively a few years ago at the Theater...so I've always been afraid to look at his dvd collection. He's actually a very bright guy, world traveler...so it is odd. For his birthdays, I try to buy him movies like "Spartacus" and "The Great Escape" to counteract any negativity in said, unknown collection.

I don't care what titles anyone has in their collection unless they have hardcore porn mixed in when I'm browsing with someone else.

Actually, I'm ashamed to think how much money I have spent over the past 10 years on acquiring my dvd collection. This reminds me of the David Lee Roth of Van Halen interview some time ago when he was asked whether he had a drug problem. To quote Roth, "I use to have a drug problem, but not any more. Now I can afford it."

DVD's are that way too for many who participate in this forum I would think.
