Teen Titans the Movie

Teen Titans growing up at Warner Bros.
By Borys Kit

May 31, 2007

DC Comics' superteam Teen Titans is getting the big-screen treatment courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures.

The live-action adaptation is being produced by Akiva Goldsman and Kerry Foster through their Weed Road banner, while Mark Verheiden has been brought on board to write the script.

The Teen Titans first appeared in 1964 as a sort of junior Justice League, comprising Robin, Kid Flash, Aqualad, Wonder Girl and Speedy, the respective sidekicks of A-list heroes Batman, Flash, Aquaman, Wonder Woman and Green Arrow.

The comic series reached X-Men-style success in the 1980s, when the team was relaunched in a new comic with the characters no longer kids but college-age adults and the stories explored more mature themes. The series also saw the addition of Cyborg, Starfire and Raven, original characters who weren't sidekicks, while the character of Robin matured into one called Nightwing.

Most recently, the comic was adapted to the television screen with a Cartoon Network series that ran from 2003-06 that used many of the '80s comics' heroes and story lines.

It is not known which heroes will be used, but Nightwing is said to be in the mix.

Goldsman said the tone will be consistent with such recent Warners' comic book fare as "Batman Begins," "Superman Returns" and the upcoming "Watchmen."

Jessica Goodman and Jesse Ehrman are overseeing for Warners.

Gregory Noveck is overseeing for DC Comics.

Verheiden, repped by CAA and Untitled, was a writer-producer on "Smallville," the TV series that revolved around the adventures of a young Clark Kent/Superman, and is a writer-producer on "Battlestar Galactica." Verheiden also is a comic writer and creator, penning "Timecop" and "The Mask," both of which were adapted to the big screen in the early 1990s.

Goldsman and Weed Road have several comic book movies in development, including "Doom Patrol" and "The Losers." He is in preproduction on the superhero-themed "Tonight He Comes," starring Will Smith.

Looks like Warners would like their own X-Men franchise. This could be really good. I'd go with the line-up from the early run of the relaunched comic from the early 80's.

I don't know.... So far it looks like DC was setting up their other properties to exist in the same Universe (What Marvel should have done) what with Superman Returns referencing Gotham and talks of a Batman/Superman Movie, Justice League and Supermax with Green Arrow and other DC alumn... IF they throw Titans into the mix, would it be in the same continuity? Would it then have to be in the future? Hard to have Nightwing without Robin, and I highly doubt we'll see him show up in any Batman movie set in the Nolanverse (which I'm fine with).

American audiences are generally pretty stupid, so mentioning Nightwing in relation to Batman and not mentioning it in a Batman series will confuse John Q. Six-pack, but NOT mentioning Batman when talking about Nightwing would infuriate Fanboy P. McGeek, so the whole rock-and-a-hard-place thing comes to mind....

Would prefer a JLA movie instead, but I'm onboard for this.

First movie: team origin, introduce the Terminator
Second movie: introduce Terra
Third movie: Judas Contract

I like the idea of this but I have this nagging feeling that they will mess it up royally. Can you imagine what would've happened if Fox had done this movie?

I thought they were going to do an animated pg-13 flick like the avengers and Iron Man. From what i read it was going to be the Terra/deathstroke storyline. I think i'd rather see that then a big budget theater film.

I wasn't an X-men reader at the time the Dark Phoenix storyline was originally serialized- but I was there for the whole Terra/Deathstroke/Judas Contract storyline and it was remains one of the highpoints of a lifetime of comic book reading. They could (and probably will) do a lot worse than to adapt that story.
Like you laid out, if they were going to do it justice, and for maximum impact, they should approach it as a serial- Tho I think I would introduce Terra in the first film and have that film conclude with her becoming a member- while keeping Terminator as the villan. Then the second film can deal with the group fighting a new foe, and then a coda at the end can bring back Terminator for one scene with a 'cliff-hanger' revealing Terra to be a traitor, and the third the Terminators plan set into motion, yadda yadda yadda and everything resolved.
Barring that one, I would go with Starfire/Blackfire. X-men tried to stay within the confines of 'relateable' mileus, but I don't see any reason one of these prperties can't go all out sci-fi fantasy. And TT looks to be one of the better positioned ones to do this.

man, it just seems like this stuff should be so easy to get right, and they still blow it more often than not.

Why put Nightwing in there? Be like the cartoon and just use Robin. At lease the general public knows who he is. It doesn't have to alter the story at all.

Then the question comes up how do you make it so that Robin is on his own without batman. He's a side kick to most of Americas eyes.

The same goes for Kid Flash, Wonder Girl/Troia and Speedy.

A nugget of information from writer Mark Verheiden (source):

I'm not sure why so many folks are assuming we won't be using the "top tier" Titans. I'm not ready to list the characters we ARE using (other than Nightwing), but you won't be disappointed. There's also a lot of discussion about possible "rights issues." There were internal conversations re: which characters we'll be using, but last time I checked, Time/Warner still owned DC Comics, meaning it's all in the family.

That's a direct to DVD project. They are adapting it, the Death Of Superman storyline(hopefully this will include the section of the JLA confronting Doomsday, especially Blue Beetle since they couldn't include him in the JLU movie because of a licensing problem), and the great mini-series The New Frontier. And if these do well, there will be more. I hope they adapt Enemy Ace: War Idyll and Wild Dog.

As for The Losers, I hope the adaptation mentioned is the classic WWII team and not the series which ended last year. Of course a Creature Commandos moivie or GI Robot movie would be cool too. We'll know the worlsd is coming to an end when we see a

And Doc, you're right. ANd also most Americans think comics and anything animated are kids stuff. I was working in a comic shop when an issue of the Vertigo title Animal Man came out. THe cover featured the main character running naked with a pack of wolves. THe day after it came out my boss had me bag every remaining issue and draw running shorts over the innocuous side view of Buddy Baker's keister.

OK I think I just heard the whole world yell "GEEK!!!" in unison at me

Just a couple of lines how he is getting out from under Batman's wings & becoming his own man (or something like that). It acknowleges his ties to Batman & go from there. If the movie is an origin movie, you have have him arriving in town from Gotham.

BTW, why is Green Arrow's lackey called Speedy? Seems that would be a better name for Flash Jr.

Actually, I was yelling "Insufferable TWAT!" at your boss.

Because he's quick with a bow. It's lame. It's why he was later "Arsenal" (pretty badass) and now "Red Arrow" (kinda lame).

He gets called "Speedy" mockingly now all the time (especially by female characters) just like they call Nightwing "Pixie Boots."

(It's funny, BrentLW, now I'm hearing a loud, echoed "GEEK!")

The problem with mentioning Batman in relation to Nightwing is it will conflict with the Batman Begins continuity. So far they seem determined to keep Robin out of the new Batman movies. Suddenly introducing Batman's former sidekick, when Batman is still at the beginning of his career, will seem strange.

But for a "franchise" that's going along the similar vein of Batman Begins, you can't tie Robin to him since he hasn't been introduced yet. Or else you'd be tying him into the Batman Forever/Batman & Robin movies which no one wants to remember.

Exactly. That's why an off-hand mention wouldn't work either. The only way I could see it working (which they'll never EVER do) is to have a brief cameo with Christian Bale aged ten years or so with makeup and some gray in his hair, and open the movie with an X-Men-esque, "In the not too distant future..." or the like.

Otherwise, just wait ten years. Once we have an awesome trilogy of Batman movies under out belt, a teen titans with a Robin (who joined up with Bats, came of age, and got through all of the awkward, hard-to-swallow unrealistic parts off-screen and in between films) becoming Nightwing and leading the Titans.

But as I said, they will NEVER do ANY of that.

‘Teen Titans’ Live-Action Movie a Go at DC Studios (Exclusive)

'Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow' scribe Ana Nogueira will write the screenplay.
March 15, 2024 1:35pm

It’s go time for the Teen Titans.

The DC heroes, which began as the teenaged sidekicks of their more famous and iconic counterparts, are getting their own live-action feature from the James Gunn and Peter Safran-led DC Studios.

The comic book movie division of Warner Bros. Discovery has tapped Ana Nogueira to pen the screenplay for the project. The hiring further ensconces the actress and playwright-turned scribe into the DC family as she is already writing Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow for the label.

The Teen Titans were first introduced in the mid-1960s and featured Robin, Kid Flash, and Aqualad as well as Wonder Girl. Other teens such as Speedy, the sidekick to Green Arrow, joined the adventures later. The comics skewed young and were not considered major sellers until the 1980s relaunch by Marv Wolfman and George Perez.

With the addition of Beast Boy and new creations Cyborg, Raven and Starfire joining Robin and Wonder Girl, The New Teen Titans became a massive hit and DC’s No. 1-selling comic. The run matured the characters, defined personalities and relationships, introduced true archenemies, with many themes and ideas that still reverberate in the comics and other storytelling forms in modern times.

The book has been revamped several times in various configurations of characters, new and old. DC Comics currently publishes Titans, featuring the classic 1980s combo but with the characters no longer teenagers.

The Teen Titans became an unexpected hit media franchise thanks to Teen Titans Go!, a comedic and frequently meta take on DC. The animated series has run eight seasons on Cartoon Network, airing close to 400 episodes. The series also spawned a feature film, Teen Titans Go! To the Movie, which was released in theaters in July 2018. The characters have also popped up in video games, among other media.

Nogueira was known for her acting, which included a stint on CW’s The Vampire Diaries and credits on such shows as The Michael J. Fox Show and the recent Starz series Hightown. However she has also built a thriving writing career, and her play Which Way to the Stage debuted off-Broadway in 2022. In November 2023, it was revealed that she was writing DC’s Supergirl, a standalone feature centered on the Kryptonian cousin of Superman. The project is now seeking a director.

She is repped by CAA for writing, Innovative for acting. She is also repped by Howard Green Entertainment and Goodman Genow.
