quality movies that weren't blockbusters in their day
i saw "Rudy" recently and it was a great movie. looking up box office, it only made $22,750,363
i would have never seen rudy if someone hadn't recommended it to me. so anyone here have movies to recommend?

That seems like a decent-sized hit. That's equivalent to $32MM today which puts it a bit below We Are Marshall.
I would say Office Space was a movie that's much more well-known now than back in the day (although I saw it opening night).
One of the biggest "bombs" that ended up being a good movie and/or saved by video sales was probably Mallrats.

Another vote for Mallrats. This generally has the reputation of being the worst of Kevin Smith's films (Jersey Girl included?), but this is actually the one that I like the most.

One of the best examples is It's a Wonderful Life. It flopped when it came out, and the studio abandoned it. It was only when it fell into the public domain and was on TV over and over at Christmas that it became so acclaimed. Ironically, if it had made more money on its original release, it might not be the classic holiday staple it is today.
