That seems like a decent-sized hit. That's equivalent to $32MM today which puts it a bit below We Are Marshall.

I would say Office Space was a movie that's much more well-known now than back in the day (although I saw it opening night).

One of the biggest "bombs" that ended up being a good movie and/or saved by video sales was probably Mallrats.

Me neither. Logic dictates, if they're worth a damn, they'll make a lot of money.

Another vote for Mallrats. This generally has the reputation of being the worst of Kevin Smith's films (Jersey Girl included?), but this is actually the one that I like the most.

The Big Lebowski has a pretty huge following, but didn't exactly crush in theaters.

One of the best examples is It's a Wonderful Life. It flopped when it came out, and the studio abandoned it. It was only when it fell into the public domain and was on TV over and over at Christmas that it became so acclaimed. Ironically, if it had made more money on its original release, it might not be the classic holiday staple it is today.

THE THING

It bombed at the box office, yet is extremely popular today, aka cult hit.

Glengarry Glen Ross

The way everyone talks about this movie, you would think it came out 5 years ago. Not 15.

Eddie and the Cruisers. It bombed at the box office but was a hit on VHS.

Well, I figure, Spider-man 2 made a boatload of money and Pluto Nash didn't, which makes Spider-man 2 classic and Pluto Nash garbage.

Well, when the budget of a movie is upwards of $100 million and it only brings in $4 million at the box office, yeah, you could probably discern that it's shit.

Not every case is so obvious, though.

Okay, replace Pluto Nash with The Island.
