Can anyone tell me why I'm so addicted to watching Cape Fear?

I cannot stop watching or thinking about Cape Fear(Marty's remake). Even though I have not seen the original(should I watch it?), I've seen the remake like over 30 times already and still get this urge to put it on. Bob's performance is just so captivating and mesmerizing that I can't help but watch it just so I can laugh at how funny and brilliant his scenes are. Every line, every dialog, every little nuance screams magnificent!

The Max Cady character is just so twisted and demented, yet so funny and clever that you can't help but be fascinated by him. It's to the point that I go to work everyday saying things out of the movie to my co-workers like "Forget about that restraining order counselor...you're well within 500 yards!" or "Now YOU will learn about loss! Loss of freedom... loss of humanity!" or "Come out come out wherever you are!"

Why do you think I'm so hooked on this film? Is it more to do with Marty's direction and script? Or is more to do with Bob's ridiculously awesome performance?

Do you suspect I'll enjoy the original film as much this one once I finally get around to watching it?

Maybe it makes you feel superior because the lawyer guy acts like such a nitwit and makes so many stupid decisions that by the end you want him to die...?

You should go watch The Simpsons' Cape Fear parody with Sideshow Bob, it's better and funnier than Cape Fear.

I have a hard time believing the Simpsons greatest episode of all time is funnier than Cape Fear.

Agreed. There are so many unintentional funny moments in Cape Fear it's downright scary.

"I'd like to...are you my friend?"

"Oooh ooh I got the all over fidges on that one!"

woman at the bar:

"What did you do, really?"

Max cadey"

No but really, what should you do?"

"This is my night counselor, don't you step...on...my...night!"

I have a buddy nicknamed "Counselor." In my opinion, it intrigues the ladies.

Strong agreement. Mitchum is great in this one. Truly menacing in one of his best roles although he's pretty good in just about everything.

I think this is a great film. I remember going to see it at the cinema and it was awesome. I picked up the DVD two pack with both films and they are both great watches. The original had Peck and Mitchum who played the roles fantastically well. Of course we had De Niro playing Cady in the remake where he really brought the character to a new dimension. The onlyproblem i have with the remake is bloody Jessica Lange. I have never found her believable and here she is just plain annoying. I wish Cady had bitten her cheek off instead....hehehehehe.

the funniest scenes in Cape fear to me and some of my favorites:

1)The whole bar scene between Lori and Max..."Well, maybe I can hack you into 40 pieces."

2)The complete dialog between Max and Kersek...."You know what you can do to brighten my day?"...."No"..."Get the hell outta here..." "I'd like to...are you my friend?"......"Ooooh Ooooh I got the ALL over fidges on that one, you REALLY shaken me up I'm shivered all over!" !

3)Scene at the end on the boat when Max is hitting Sam in the face with the pistol. (smack)"I'm sorry your honor, that WAS argumentative"...."Look at me, I'm standin' here!"(smack)..."Loss of freedom..loss of humanity...now, you and I will truly be the same counselor" !

4)Max talkin to Danny on the phone while hanging upside down..."You can trust me cuz I'm the 'DO RIGHT' man"

5)Max, all bruised up, walks over to the clerk at the airport and does a MARVELOUS con job on her..."We might lose this case, we already lost our little daughter Danny...*pause*...is there any way I can find out if he was on that flight?"

Man, there's soooo many good parts of this movie I could go on and on. I don't even think DeNiro HIMSELF realizes how magnificent he was in the film.

JUST WATCHED THE ORIGINAL CAPE FEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was a lot better than I thought! I mean A LOT better. Man, Mitchum ROCKS in this film! I honestly must say he gives Bob Deniro a serious run for his money performance wise.

Still gotta give the nod to the '92 remix. The ending of the original was just too plain corny. Shooting him and just saying things like "You're gonna be going to jail for a long time".....compared to Marty's version where it's a lot more menacing on the house boat and then the shit talking from DeNiro at the beach...it's just soooo much better IMHO.

Well I'm finally glad I've seen the original. It's now my favorite black and white film of all time

Seriously I like it A LOT. It's almost as good as the remake but not quite there IMHO. Nothing tops "Forget about that restraining order counselor! You're well within 500 yards!!"...*SMACK*

I'm glad you enjoyed the original. I prefer the original to the remake, myself. Mitchum is the man. Classic films are great. Thats why they are called classic.

You probably like it because of Bernard Herrmann's obsessive original music score from the first film, carried over and amplified about a hundred times in 5.1 channels by Elmer Bernstein's arrangements.

Unlike many other Herrmann classics, Cape Fear never allows you to come up for air, constantly brooding in Psycho fashion and maintaining an intense sense of malice regardless of volume.

Also probably because Robert De Niro is the ultimate modern day Bogeyman, expert at going whacko, whether as a lonely nutjob (Taxi Driver) or as a Mafioso killer. The religious obsession here is a nice touch, which actually makes his performance a tad different - but not much - from all his other films, while still referencing Robert Mitchum in both Night of the Hunter and the original Cape Fear. And Scorsese's life pursuit is "bigger schlock thrills for the masses". It's all good.

Of course, the Simpsons version is infinitely superior in every way:

P.S.: Alf Clausen's score for this episode - a take-off on Bernard Herrmann's riffs - also won an Emmy.

I was wondering if everyone was going to overlook that "I'm sorry your honor, that WAS argumentative" line.

Truly a great flick, first time I recall seeing Juliette Lewis who I've loved ever since.

"Uh oh...am I busted?"

EDIT: I've always thought of seeing the original...but I doubt it'll be better simply because it'll be the "remake" in my mind. But I'll surely have to see it now!
