Billy Joel "12 Gardens Live" - 6/13/2006

(I did a search, didn't find this mentioned)

According to this site -

This extraordinary double-CD release from Billy Joel was recorded live at Madison Square Garden during his recent record-breaking TWELVE sold-out shows in New York City and features amazing live versions of greatest hits and fan favorites!

Disc 1 -
1. Angry Young Man
2. My Life
3. Everybody Loves You Now
4. The Ballad Of Billy The Kid
5. The Entertainer
6. Vienna
7. New York State Of Mind
8. The Night Is Still Young
9. Zanzibar
10. Miami 2017 (I've Seen The Lights Go Out On Broadway)
11. The Great Wall Of China
12. Allentown
13. She's Right On Time
14. Don't Ask Me Why
15. Laura

Disc 2 -
1. Goodnight Saigon
2. Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)
3. An Innocent Man
4. The Downeaster "Alexa"
5. She's Always A Woman
6. Keeping The Faith
7. The River Of Dreams
8. A Matter Of Trust
9. We Didn't Start The Fire
10. Big Shot
11. You May Be Right
12. Only The Good Die Young
13. Scenes From An Italian Restaurant
14. Piano Man
15. And So It Goes
--------------------------
I've been keeping track of his recent tour and I'm surprised that "Stiletto", "All For Leyna", and "Pressure", among others aren't included. But I am happy that this has "Great Wall of China", "The Entertainer", and "The Night Is Still Young".

Cool! I'll be picking this up. Saw him twice in Philly on this tour.
Glad they didn't make it 6/6/06 like everything else.

why no dvd? granted the show prob. wasn't filmed, but in this day and age, you'd think for a big name like this (and the fact that he doesn't really have a decent live dvd), that at least one show at msg would have been filmed.

Happy to see this... I was very sad not to be able to go see him on tour this time around. I'm more looking forward to the lesser hits than yet another live version of "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant"..!

I enjoyed the Vegas show a lot. From that list, he didn't play Vienna (which is a song I love), The Night Is Still Young, Miami 2017 (I've Seen The Lights Go Out On Broadway), The Great Wall Of China, She's Right on Time, or Laura. He did everything on Disc two, except And So It Goes. Too bad they didn't include "Highway To Hell" here; that was a fun moment.

I'll probably get this, though Michael Corvin is right, there's a lot of overlap with Millenium. I'm hoping for a concert DVD since both ones currently available (Yankee Stadium and The River Of Dreams Concert disc on the My Lives box set) really suck.

Just out of curiousity, what about the 'Yankee Stadium' disc sucks? Just personal preference, or quality of it? I have the VHS (still have yet to upgrade!) and love it.

Just noticed : The disc is up for preorder on billyjoel.com. They have a "bonus gift" with preorder : a digital dowload of "Sleeping With The Television On". That's a song that I don't think has ever been part of his repitoir and would be an interesting bonus. I wonder if it'll be included at any B &M as an exclusive bonus?

And to answer that month-old question above -- the Yankee Stadium concert is pretty well unwatchable with way too many rapid-cuts edits and very frequest use of primative digital processes like negative and strobe effects. The video gives me a splitting headache. Why so many video directors feel the need to monkey around with things in the editing room instead of letting the performer do the entertaining is totally beyond me.

Will this have as many overdubs as the Millennium Concert? If so, think I'll pass.

I caught this tour when it came to D.C. and was blown away at just how great a show he put on. Even when he had one of his roadies come out and sing "Highway to Hell". Shame they could not put out discs with highlights from individual shows. I would have loved Captain Jack to be on this set (since he did it in D.C.)

I never did know how to spot overdubs on live albums. Is it very obvious? Clearly none were used on KOHUEPT as he flubs Dylan's lyrics.

Just a heads-up : Fry's has this for the absurdly low price of $8.77 this weekend. That's far lower than anyone else by at least $5. I'll be picking it up for sure now.

Anyone get it yet?

I happen to be listening to the 12 Gardens Live album on Napsterlinks recently. I thought that it was a decent album. it's not one of my favorite live albums by him. But it's not bad either. Which tracks did you guys like within the album?

'12 GARDENS' Hidden & Bonus Tracks

I saw an earlier mention of a digital download bonus track, and thought I'd pass on what I know.

1) If you order(ed) the cd from Sony/Legacy, you receive(d) access to digital downloads of the following tracks:

'Sleeping With The Television On'
'You're My Home'

2) If you order(ed) the cd from ITUNES, you receive(d) digital downloads of the following tracks:

'Stiletto'
'Honesty'

3) Everyone SHOULD know by now there are 2 'hidden' tracks at the end of each cd:

CD1: 'A Room Of Our Own'
CD2: 'It's Still Rock And Roll To Me'

There you go...36 Tracks (all of which I now have)...Who Could Ask For Anything More (Besides 10 more tracks)?

Man I'd love to get those extra tracks. He played Stiletto at my show and it was awesome.

I really like the rarities on this live album. it's great to finally have live versions of songs like Zanzibar, Laura, She's right On Time and Vienna.
I would have liked more of them because even though they're concert staples, how many times do we need live versions of Angry Young Man, Billy The Kid or Piano Man?

BTW : How did you get those bonus tracks? You didn't buy the album twice, right?

So, what d'ya think? Will Joel continue his retirement from studio recordings, or will he be the next Stephen King?

Technically, he is retired from writing new pop music. He did record a couple of covers for his GH 3 album.
The recent EW article hinted that he might start writing again soon. I hope he does; a dozen years is a hell of a long drought. And I don't think we'll need another live album for a while...
