Starved: Season One Discussion

Don't forget to set your Tivos or tune in to FX at 10pm Eastern.

Spoiler:
Four New Yorkers -- Sam, Billie, Adam, and Dan -- struggle with various eating disorders and lean on each other for support. The friends attend Belttighteners, a radical support group that takes an unconventional, harsh approach to recovery. To Billie's horror, Sam secretly tries to mold his date into a woman from a sultry TV commercial. Adam continues to shake down deliverymen for food and Dan struggles with his decision for gastric bypass surgery.

I'll be tuning in. Hopefully this and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (which airs right after) will be two solid comedies.

This one isn't getting good reviews. The buzz on the other one is far more positive.

Spoiler:
I'm a little confused about guys having an eating disorder, unless they are lardos or something, which I assume that is not the case here.

I've been looking forward the second show a bit more, but I'll be tuning into this one for curiosity's sake.

If you look at the website, one of the characters does look rather large. Presumably, he's the one
Spoiler:
who wants to get gastric bypass surgery.

That was actually a lot better than I thought it would be. I figured it would be kind of a one-note show, but it ended up being pretty enjoyable.

It was interesting - the scene in the diner w/ their friend's scale was disturbing, yet humorous, because I know a few who would totally do the same thing.

Definitely better than I thought it would be.

Well, this was quite a surprise. I was expecting a horribly bland show, and instead got a fairly charming little comedy.

(Side note: Did the show run over a bit for anyone else? I had it set up on DVR, and the show cut off with a few minutes left. Luckily, I had it set up to record "It's Always Sunny..." as well, so I was in luck.)

I'm not really sold on this one, but it was certainly good enough to check out again. It seemed a little stilted at times such as when the female character was talking about them being gay. It was almost like someone who tells a joke and laughs hilariously, but he's the only one laughing. It was just flat.

Plus, I just have a hard time believing the main dude would be so vain about his weight. He doesn't dress or act or live like somebody you'd think would be that concerned about something like that. Maybe that's just a preconceived notion based on stereotypes, but that's what I kept thinking throughout.

Still, it has potential.

Yeah, it ran like five minutes over despite having started on time. Weird. As a result, I lost the last few minutes of Philadephia. I think I'll pad Philadelphia next week.

Not bad, but man, F/X really likes to push that envelope. The group meetings were hilarious.

Not as funny as the Philadelphia show - I would have flipped them around.

According to this story on CNN.com, all the main actors on the show have struggled with eating disorders themselves. Here's a quote from Eric Schaeffer, who plays the lead and wrote and directed the series...
"I have to write from my experience," says Schaeffer, 43, who has liberally drawn on his experience with eating disorders. "If I wasn't a member of the club, I don't think it would be as funny, or that I would feel as authorized to look at it with humor."

I liked it quite a bit. Don't know if I'll become devoted to it. I think it will be one of those shows that if I see it, I see it. I could see me forgetting what night it's on and to DVR it.

My DVR cut off the last few mins. as well but I caught it all on the repeat.

The girl who played Sara was cute I thought.

In the opening scenes with the main guy (Sam?) on the scale, unless he is like 5' 2" he seems like he should weigh more then 150-160.

The group leader lady was annoying.

the timing was off the charts on this, and then of course Sunny afterwards, I got a later showing and there was at least 10 mins cut off, glad I was watching semi-live so I knew to record the next show.

I loved how dumb sarah was, that was hilarious, it seems to be quite a touching show, or at least the ending seemed like it.

Pretty out there with the BJ scene, and the pretty realistic wretching from the cop.

I do wonder how far they can take the eating disorder part, as they are all compulsive, so the cop fakes a pullover to get chinese food, they need to mix it up a bit.

I liked the other show much much better

This first episode held my interest enough to tune in again. I'm not completely sold on it yet though.

Through the almighty power of TIVO, I just watched the first ep last night and I dug it. Characters intrigued me enough to want more...

Loved the rather boundary-pushing language/content, especially that very slurpy oral scene.

I tried watching this last week, and I think I tuned out when they were sitting in the diner, where the lesbian was talking about how gay the guy was for wanting an emotional connection or something like that. I just could not get into these characters at all, and the writing rubbed me the wrong way. I think I'll try to give the other show a chance, though.

I'm shocked to read this thread.

How does Eric Schaeffer still get jobs?

The show has some funny spots but it also has spots where I'm left uncomfortable.
