Judas Priest fans -- I need your input

I've never listened to any of their albums, just a few tracks here and there. I figured I'm long overdue to check them out a little more, so I was wondering:

1. Which albums do I absolutely HAVE to listen to?
2. Which ones should I definitely avoid?

Oh yeah!

You'll probably want to avoid the Ripper Owens albums. Not necessarily bad, but not really the Judas Priest experience either. And Turbo sucks.

you need them all !!!

Actually if you have to choose a few to start with...

1) Defenders Of The Faith is one of the Greatest Metal albums of all time
2) Unleashed in the East is one of the greatest live albums of all time and covers much of the early carrer. (get the extended version which has extra tracks which are essential)
3) Metalworks . 2 extended discs of essentials, covers most of it for beginners
4) Priest Live ... A little overproduced but still gives a taste of the Priest concert experience.
5) Live In London. The last Ripper Owens album shows how great of a singer he really is bolting out Priest classics and has the best songs from his 2 studio albums.

as a side note...

Halford Live Innsurection. covers the best material from Rob Halford's side projects including Fight and Halford, plus has some Priest classics forgotten on the live Priest albums

all of the albums are good but the last ones you should get are probably Rocka Rolla and Turbo (which isn't bad... just really commercial)

I agree with all choices listed and I also suggest their latest "Angel of Retribution" and as a bonus, Rob Halford's "Resurrection" cd . One thing that IMHO Priest doesn't get nearly enough credit for is not only having great hard rocking songs, but some truly well written and well played slower stuff. Halford is such a great singer and his range is awesome. I mean they're "Ballad" songs without coming across like lame ass 80's hair band ballads.

Also, after having seen them just a few weeks ago live, DO YOURSELF A FAVOR and get to one of their shows ASAP. Dear God man, they still rock and they come from an age where putting on good stage shows was an impartant part of the giving to the fans.

Many groups today could learn a lot from older Metal bands when it comes to live shows....

It was some half hour tape this guy made at a parking lot for a Judas Priest show back in the mid-80's. It takes place only in the parking lot. Funny stuff. Just do a search for Heavy Metal Parking lot and you'll find their website. The guy just did a recent set of shows that aired on cable TV in the past year (outside a Cher concert, Yanni, Motorhead, Dragon Con, Fleetwood Mac).

I completely disagree. The Priest remasters (by Peter Mew) are among the worst (over-compressed garbage) I have ever heard. Stick with the original versions. IMHO, of course.

NO mentions of Sad Wings of Destiny? It's absolutely my favorite Priest record and an awesome listen.

Agreed, this is a GREAT album, highlighting the mello side of Priest.

That said, my favs (in no particular order)
- Sad Wings of Destiny
- British Steel
- Screaming for Vengeance
- Defenders of the Faith

For the beginner, the Metalworks collection is quite nice. It's got most of the songs I'd recommend for a beginner.
