Hey all, wondering if the anyone here could give me some suggestion for some good folk rock. I've heard a good amount of stuff: Bob Dylan, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Neil Young, Nick Drake, Fairport Convention, Fleetwood Mac, Cat Stevens, Donovan, The Byrds, The Band, etc..

Anyone have any albums to suggest that are comparable to the work of said artists? Would be much appreciated

First and foremost, you really need to own some John Prine if you don't already. Someone with your taste in music should, at the very least, own his double disc greatest hits album.

For some newer stuff try:

Sufjan Stevens (I'd start off with Illinois or Michigan)
Iron & Wine

Richard Thompson. Especially his acoustic work.

Warren Zevon, folk rock?

I knew I should have qualified that suggestion.

ThickAsABrick’s list includes Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, The Byrds, The Band- a large amount of these bands’ material is not what I would consider folk rock. If ThickAsABrick wants great songwriting, Warren Zevon fits in, not all his songs rock out.

Agents of Good Roots (more rock than folk-rock)
Amos Lee (folksy soul)
Terry Callier (folksy soul, very soul, early records are best)
Alejandro Escovedo (leans towards country-rock)
Andrew Bird (his newest, The Mysterious Production of Eggs, is excellent)
Bright Eyes (start with LIFTED or the country-ish I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning)

Anyone remeber Tim Flannery who used to play for the San Diego Padres? Well, he has a great band and his music fits right into the OPs radar screen.

I was in Pittsburgh in 1999 for a training class. Scalped Springsteen seats and then got upgraded to 2nd row center. Too wired after the show to crash, so went down to the hotel bar. On my way back to my room, heard guitar and singing. Thinking it was Bruce (his entourage was staying in my hotel and he and Patty were in the Gov. Suite one floor down from my room), I investigated. It was Tim singing, with a bunch of the players (the Pads were in town to play the Pirates and they too were staying in my hotel) hanging out. I asked if he minded if I joined in for a listen. He said not at all. And he even asked his catcher (Carlos Delgado?) to go downstairs and grab me a Guinness. Bottom line, a great night all around........

Ok...maybe it wasn't such a short story. But anyways, Tim's music is pretty darn good.
