Weekend Box Office 3/25-3/27
I guess people decided to go see Bernie Mac and Ashton Kutcher instead of Sandra Bullock. At least we can look forward to next week when Sin City opens.
Two tired-looking comedies check in to the box office this weekend and both find a decent amount of success in a marketplace devoid of that sort of thing.
Guess Who
The pseudo-update of Guess Who's Coming To Dinner took in a very good $8.2 million Friday, easily outpacing all other films in the marketplace. Really the first comedy targeted at teens and adults since Hitch seven weekends ago, the duo of Fox sitcom stars Bernie Mac and Ashton Kutcher clicked with audiences, at least for one weekend. Johnson Family Vacation, which similarly opened on Easter weekend, scored a 2.9 internal multiplier last year. Easter has traditionally taken a bite out of the weekend somewhat, so a 2.8 is probably best case scenario here, indicating a $23 million Friday-to-Sunday for Guess Who.
Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous
The other comedy released this weekend, the critically-slaughtered sequel to 2000's Miss Congeniality, inexplicably opened on Thursday, earning $3.1 million. That, along with Guess Who, may have kneecapped its Friday figure, where it took in an estimated $5.6 million. In its favor for a positive internal multiplier is that it's a date movie and that the original was well-received. Against it are Guess Who, the sequel-factor and Easter. We'll cop out and call it 2.5 to give the Sandra Bullock sequel $14 million for the weekend and $17 million in four days.
Notable Holdovers
The Ring Two plunges a mammoth 64.8% from last Friday, signalling the death knell for this franchise. Look for a 60% decline from its total last weekend.
Ice Princess drops 35%, indicating decent legs with the target audience. A weekend decline as low as 25% could be in store for the Disney flick.

I do have to agree, Hostage is a Top Ten worthy film upon reflection.
A fairly enjoyable movie, aside from being predictable and somewhat disjointed.
(Aside from that... Nothing else is Top Ten material.)

There's usually a glut of movies that I have lined up, wanting to see. Lately, I've really had to stretch to go see anything. I've only seen the bottom 4 on the list and really don't have any interest in the others until I buy my niece Robots and Ice Princess on DVD. I went to see The Upside of Anger today and kinda liked it, but I really hope it picks up in the next little while. I have way too much time on my hands and need movies to go see, dammit!!

I think all the movies that are on the top 10 list deserve to be there 
If the general public is interested in watching them, then no reason for me to criticize. Especially films like Hitch, The Pacifier, and Robots. They wouldn't be making that much if there wasn't a general interest in them.

Eh, who is anybody to say what's "deserving" anyway? I mean, yeah, most of the movies on that list look like crap to me, but I recognize I'm not "Joe Six Pack." If you're going to be outraged at the tastes of mainstream America, you're going to be outraged for a long time... I just shrug and move on.

I went to see The Pacifier with my (much much) younger brother and sister and it's not terrible. It's NOT a movie for adults, not even close, so I'm not sure why it's getting all the criticism. Well, no, I'm sure it's because it has Vin "But You Liked Me in SPR" Diesel. Sure, it's extremely low on believability, but it has an alright fight sequence and a decent message.
And Be Cool I thought was actually funny, if less stellar than its predecessor.
So does anyone here disagree with critics and like a panned movie?
