Ideal age to first watch "Star Wars"?

I'm itching to introduce my daughter to the original Star Wars trilogy, but she's only about 5. I saw Star Wars when I was 9 and loved it, and I wonder how early I should introduce it to her without missing that "magic" time when it would make the biggest impression.

She's fully into the Pixar movies about now. She hasn't watched a whole lot of live-action films. But she's a sharp chick and, with age, is developing a fine appreciation of the cinematic arts. At about what age would you show it to her?

P.S. We will have no mention of the prequel trilogy in this thread. Thanks.

I'd say around 12 to 18 months.

That was my first thought, yes. Oh, wait, I thought you said "minutes."

I don't see why you can't watch it anytime now. I saw Star Wars for the first time when I was five, and I certainly wasn't 'sharp' back then.

Way to kill the fun in a thread...

I was six, but I suppose 5 wouldn't be too early.

I took my sons to see the 'Special Editions' in the theaters when they reissued them and they loved 'em. They were maybe 7 and 5.

Sad ta say...they like the "not mentioned ones" more, as they are more modern and have "faster lightsaber duels." Presentation is almost more important at a young age than story. So...don't let her see those ever, or be prepared for your heart to be broken when ya ask her which one she wants to watch and she says "let's watch Jar Jar!"

I was four when the first one came out, and remember it fondly.

And no, I didn't like "Jar Jar." Darth Maul 4 teh win.

I was born in 74, and I'm fairly certain I saw it at either the first showing or one of the reissues in 78 or 79. I didn't have a problem at that age, unless you count total obsession to this day with Star Wars and Star Trek and such.

My nephews (7 and 4) are the same way. They like the whole series ("Stahhh Waaahhs" were some of the youngest's first words, and would shout them pointing at the screen whenever the trademark opening music came on) but for some tragic reason, they prefer the newer ones. I've been trying to re-educate them for years. One day they'll come to their senses.

I say go for it. I was 8 when it first came out and saw it then. I think a 5 year old can handle it.

I didn't watch it till it was rereleased in the 90's. And I'm 21 now.

It was kind of funny, because I was like "oooohhhh, so THIS is what Spaceballs was all about".

I think that any kid who can sit still for two hours would like the new trilogy. Not sure about the old... But I'm thinking like 8-9 years old.

I saw it at age 5 and it was my All, my Everything for the next decade.

I was 7 in 1977 when I saw it. Seemed like the perfect age for me, athough I probably liked it then for far different reasons than I like it now.

I don't think it will matter. Kids now have been force fed so many films with copius amounts of visual effects, no child can ever truly appreciate what the original trilogy had to offer.

I was probably only four when I first saw SW (I was born in '74), and I don't think that was too young. In fact, I'm glad I saw it when I did since all my friends saw it too.

I heard a channel teaser on XM the other day..."Remember when tattoos were bad and Star Wars was good?"

Don't think so, just didn't want to talk about 'em. They're not the Star Wars films I care about. Of course, neither are the special editions of the OT. But now we're getting off into a whole other discussion.

Thanks for all the replies, guys. Here's a sexist question: Do you think your answer would be different for boy vs. girl? Do boys just innately love this kind of stuff? Are there any women in this thread?

My daughter was about three when she first saw it. She sat down next to me after I popped it into the VCR and enjoyed it almost as much as Barney. My son was 4 when the entire family went to see TPM in the theater. He totally idenified with Anakin (he looks a little like him). He was a little scared by Darth Maul but not too badly. He was hooked from then on. Alas he's moved on to Power Rangers now.
