Where have all the really good serio-comedies gone...like "My Cousin Vinny"?

Where have all the comedies that were one part serious and dramatic and three parts funny. The ones that become classics and produce Oscar winners for goodness sakes!!

I mean now they make slapstick, go-for-broke have to out do each other preceeding movie in the gross out department.

Where are the good ones! The "My Cousin Vinny" 's, "The Breakfast Club" 's, hell any John Hughes serio-comedy of adolescent grandeur!

Where have they all gone...

What are your favorite ones in this genre...

Would American Beauty, Forrest Gump, and Pulp Fiction be examples of what you're talking about? Or are they too serious?

Maybe Shakespeare in Love? That one's definitely considered a comedy.

no, no...things like "My Cousin Vinny"...a true comedy with just a slight dramatic flare that makes it a great movie all around. those above are absolute dramas and exceptional ones at that. i am talking the John Hughe's-ish, the "Can't Buy Me Love's", "The Flamingo Kid's", the "Sixteen Candles", I know those are all 80's, but for example. The ones that are comedy, but has so much feeling as well.

Loved My Cousin Vinny. I would name Grosse Pointe Blank as an excellent example of the type of movie you refer to, as well as one of my favorites. Also My Blue Heaven was pretty good, but not quite as funny.

It sounds like someone hasn't seen Shaun of the Dead yet.

kinda...good examples. the ones that are funny, but have heart!! GPB is one of my all time favs and perfect black comedy we should say, not necessarily the all around happy funny movie with heart, but a darker one.

they seem to be a dying breed. this can't be right.

i think these are getting a little too dark from what i am intending. but these are fine examples of dark comedies with heart. that should be a whole other thread.

I would love to see some more John Hughes-ish movies --- they all rule.

American Pie series is the next closest, and most recent, thing I think.

My Cousin Vinny rules. ("Look kid I didn't come down here to get jerked around...")

i might even put "Mean Girls" there...might. maybe even "Girl Next Door", but that is a stretch.

it's so hard to think of them, there just not there...

What about Sideways?

Also, if we're going 90s, there's Groundhog Day, Galaxy Quest, Waiting for Guffman, The Ref, The Truth About Cats and Dogs, LA Story, and Strictly Ballroom.

I think all the PIXAR films fit the bill of "comedies with heart."

I'm also very partial to Shaolin Soccer.

It came out before Vinny, but I would say Doc Hollywood was in that tradition.

yes, that is the tradition i speak of. certainly not as great as Vinny, but worthy nonetheless.

Liar, Liar came to mind after your description. Top notch comedy, and a little, whadyaknow... heart.
