Man-Thing Going Straight to TV
Source: Fangoria January 25, 2005

Fangoria has learned that Lions Gate Films and Marvel Studios' Man-Thing, directed by Brett Leonard, will indeed by-pass theaters and will air on Sci Fi Channel in April. The movie will then come to DVD on June 14.

more for you to read below from here

According to Moviehole, The Daily Telegraph reports that actor Mark Stevens will play the Man Thing. Stevens joins Rachael Taylor, Steve Bastoni, Robert Mammone, William Zappa, Ian Bliss, and Imogen Bailey on the film, now shooting in Sydney. "But according to the paper, Man Thing isn't using any studios at the new Kurnell complex because that won't be finished till next year. It's using some wooded areas on site that look like Louisiana swampland. The low-budget film has also been shot at Wisemans Ferry and will use an oyster farm next week before moving to an indoor swamp constructed at Homebush's Waterfront Studios."

I always loved the comic books back in the day. Can't imagine this film doing them any kind of justice. But I'll check it out anyway, I suppose.

This movie must really stink if they're not gonna release it to theaters.
Straight to TV is a very bad sign.
Anyone know the offical rating?
I'll probably wait for the dvd release cause the TV version shown will more than likely be cut here or there for one reason or another.

This always seemed to be one of the more unlikely Marvel properties to be made into a film, and I was surprised when I originally heard of a theatrical release (then again, DC's Swamp Thing had two theatrical films, so what do I know ). Anyway, to be honest, direct to the Sci Fi channel sounds about right.

In a recent issue of Wizard, Avi Arad (Marvel's movie QC man) basically said that "Man Thing" has been the only truly negative experience in the recent pantheon of Marvel movies thus far. Apparently the filmmakers were way off in Austrailia somewhere, unsupervised, and did whatever they wanted with the project. Arad clearly wasn't happy about it, and said that the film might go stright to DVD, if that. It sounded like there was a very good chance it may go nowhere, but I guess they had to at least quietly try to recoup some of their losses.

Anyhow, you didn't need to know all that to suspect that this movie probably should've stayed in the swamp, but there you go.

Hmmm, Arad must not have seen Electra or the Fantastic Four trailer.

:-)

Do they even have any shots from the movie available?

If they made this into a real movie, I think the only way to do it would be to hire someone like David Lynch and make it a weird or rama kind of film.

I thought Elektra was pretty decent. There were a few supernatural elements that didn't really fit, but overall I enjoyed it. I was, and still am to some extent, a huge comic book fan and to see these characters come to life has just been awesome.

I personally can't wait for Fantastic Four to come out, I think it looks really great so far. The trailer isn't awesome, I'll give everyone that. But you gotta remember that these are movies based on comic books. They're not going to be masterpieces of cinema, they're going to be reflective of the comic books. Fantastic Four was never a really deep book like Spider-Man or Daredevil. It was at its truest form a book of adventures into the unknown. A Marvel science fiction tale at its finest.

Man-Thing... well, I don't know. I never read it much, and I'm not really sure how it'll appear on film. Truthfully, I don't think it should have made it to the big screen. A Sci-Fi premiere is good enough for me for this movie.

Heres some news from comic continuum:

The Man-Thing movie will debut on Sci Fi Channel on April 30, The Continuum has learned.

Here's how the network describes the film:

"Angry conflicts arise between an oil tycoon developer and the Seminole Indians who are being pushed out of their ancestral homelands. When construction crewmembers start turning up dead, law enforcement immediately suspects the Seminoles. But further investigation points to the swamp creature known as Man-Thing, a dangerous entity that feeds off human emotion and literally burns those who know fear."

The film is produced by Lions Gate and will be released by the studio in its R-rated version on DVD later this year.

I have to briefly derail the thread and give a slow clap for that reference. I didn't know anybody else had ever heard of that comic. I got issue #1 (I can't imagine there were too many more) free with a purchase at a comic book store once. Very funny.

My girlfriend's mom got me a copy of Kickers, Inc for Christmas. It's not like she just got me that one issue, she bought a stack of 25 comics or so at a flea market and that was in with them.

the toys that were meant to launch with the film just started showing up on store shelves...wonder how much that will cost them.
