using Avia to calibrate video

How far from the tv should you be when using the video test patterns on the Avia disk? I thought I read somewhere that you should only be a couple of feet back so that you can clearly make out the patterns. That seems to make sense to me since trying to make out the brightness pattern (the two black bars) from 12 feet away is tough.

Adjust the settings while sitting at the normal sweet spot sitting distance with the ambient lighting and normal viewing levels. The only times I sit close is for adjusting convergence but now I use binoculars.

Would you sit in the same spot when doing the user menu convergence? My set has notches on the sides to line up the green cross, but those are hard to see from across the room.
