There's an editorial on the last page of the new TIME about why Spider-Man 2 and Shrek 2 have been so popular. In his editorial, this professional reviewer makes a silly mistake that almost everyone in this forum will catch:

Sorry Richard, but the 1977 version of STAR WARS didn't have "Episode IV: A New Hope" tacked on at the beginning...that wasn't there until a later re-release of the film.

He also mentions in the article that BATMAN RETURNS was superior to BATMAN...but since that's a personal opinion, I'll let it slide.

Plus, he's nuts if he thinks there were no sequels before 1977.

He's not saying there weren't any sequels before 1977, I think he's simply pointing out that Star Wars was the beginning of the "blockbuster franchise" concept of making sequels.

He doesn't need to go to Movie School...he just needs to visit DVDTalk more.

It is commonly pointed out that Star Wars was the beginning of the summer blockbuster craze of movies. It certainly ushered in an era of unprecedented sequels in hollywood history.

Yeah I hear there is a whole semester on Star Wars at movie school. For the final exam, you have to watch the SEs and point out every single change.

It wasn't. Spielberg's Jaws was.

If they'd left out the Penguin and focused on Batman vs Catwoman, I'd agree with this. As it stands now I like them both about equally.

His facts were wrong but it is still relatively correct - the serial setup of Star Wars begged for sequelss and prequels. Too bad the prequels sucked ass.

Looking back on it, I would say the greatest strength of the Star Wars franchise was that there was always a backstory you didn't really know too much about. That was part of the excitment of the movie.
