I have been browsing a lot of the threads here and it seems like there is or at least a lot of talk around Hollywood about doing remakes and doing sequals of movies from long ago like Superman or remake of Dawn of the Dead (though I really liked that one). Whats going on, seems like we are seeing less original work and more rehashing of the same old stuff. Its to bad they won't let fresh writers in. Its such a tight circle among the writers. I just wonder if the golden age of Hollywood will ever return?

There are always a ton of new movies along with the remakes and sequels.

I think that Hollywood is alive and well.

I don't really think we're ever going to get that golden age of Hollywood back. Why? Mainly because I don't think there ever really was one. Granted, in the 70s there was kind of a renaisance where many unique films were the leading product put out by Hollywood, but in general Hollywood has been dominated by unoriginal films, and in general most films are mediocre to bad.

Basically I think we all look back and remember what was good, but we see now and see everything...from good to bad. The same thing happens with foreign films...we see the good ones and start sayig how foreign films are soo much better than american ones.

Even though we have a much larger number of sequels and remakes nowadays, we also have an industry that pumps out MUCH more product than before. In the end, I imagine we get just as many original films as we used, plus all this other stuff. And the quality? Well, in general I think it remains the same...some really good stuff, lots of ok stuff,, and LOTS of crap. That's alwys how it's been.

I agree. There is always a great amount of Remakes, Sequels and so forth mixed in with just about, if not more Original ideas. Someone who names themseleves the movieguru should be aware of that. Just because you notice a flood of one doesn't mean that a flood of the other wont be ahead down the line.

Besides, we need enough new original content so we can remake it down the line.

If filmmakers like Scorcese, Soderbergh, Coen Brothers, Fincher, W. Anderson, PT Anderson, Weir, Zwick, Spike Lee, Cameron, Spielberg, Burton, and Jonze keep directing movies


and actors like Depp, Norton Clooney and so keep starring in them

Yeah the big reduction in the missing inserts since there not getting $25 for their hard pressed plastic disc pun intended. Nice their releasing "The Hunger' October 5th for the spook season.

Remakes are nothing new - they've been around since movies began, with some titles being remade even before sound was introduced.

Some of the high-profile mid-20th century hits were remakes, including Ben Hur, The Ten Commandements and A Star Is Born.

And sequels are nothing new, either - Valentino made Son of the Sheik in 1926!

oh well, Hollywood does it because it's profitable. You can't really blame them, because the profits are good, but these movies sure aren't satisfying, IMO.

Until the movie going public starts going to see original movies there will always be remakes and sequels. Don't blame Hollywood, blame moviegoers.

I always get a laugh when someone brings this up. Yes, Hollywood has re-made films, and they've had series of films starring certain characters (Thin Man, Tarzan, Charlie Chan, etc.), but please don't compare that era to the one now, it's like night & day. That constituted only a very small percantage of studio films up until the mid-70's.

The reason why so much of the mainstream product put out by Hollywood today are sequels, re-makes and films based on TV shows, toys, rides etc, is because films cost so much nowadays. Studios try to minimize the risk by making films based on already established plots & characters - they have a built in audience.

However blame for the lack of originality in Hollywood films is shared by both the studios & audience. As long as people keep going to see re-makes, sequels etc., Hollywood will keep cranking them out.

Thank God for Independent films.
