USA Today's top 40 albums

Pretty boring but a couple interesting picks.

Here are some thoughts.

1. I'm amazed/apalled at some of the albums they chose in light of the artists' other work*.
2. I also don't understand the point in roundly dismissing concept albums (especially considering The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust is about as conceptual as you get).
3. The arbitrary dismissal of Sgt. Pepper's doesn't seem like an attempt to really place any value on other albums, but an effort to seem alternative (while laying down Revolver and Pet Sounds and Exile on Main St. and and and... like shotgun blasts - hey hey).
4. Wouldn't a top 40 list -listed by year- make more sense if it was from, say, the last 40 years. I guess '85 just wasn't Tom Waits year...
5.
Spoiler:
What the hell is Sinead O'Connor doing on a top 40 list?!

6.
Spoiler:
Sign 'o' the Times, w00t! That really is a good pick, though if they allowed soundtracks, Purple Rain would have been the real charm.

*What I'm really trying to say is that I can't believe she ranked Automatic for the People but not Murmur.

Yeh, there's another shocker; I like the album but it's no classic. I wonder just how much of this is simply trying to be provocative.

What's the difference between a "formal" concept album and a "daring" concept album, other than the fact that one isn't allowed, and the other made the list?

The inclusion of Neil Young's "Greendale" was a shocker to me, too. It wouldn't even have a spot among the top 15 Neil Young albums for me.

I was going to give this list a based on the absence of any Eminem album...

...until I saw number 39...

And re: Sign 'O' the Times...if you want to get really technical...that is a soundtrack. Granted, it's a "Concert" film...but, still...

Why in the world is Eminem always on these lists? An autobiography only matters when someone is of importance, not some vulgar freak from Detroit

Because, despite what you think of his character, he's become an integral part of the hip-hop community. Not to mention his success with album sales/hit singles/Grammy nominations. Let's not even get into his effect on MTV/pop culture (and it doesn't matter what you think of said culture, it matters whether or not he had an impact). Sounds like he carries some level of "importance" to me.

Couldn't this list have been presented in the form of a pie chart?

Only if you allow compilations or greatest hits. His 50's albums had a lot of filler. And before you bring it up, The Sun Sessions may have been recorded in the 50's, but it's really a compilation album released in the mid-70's.

ETA - I hit send too early. A hearty for the first album. It's long been one of my favorites.

Yes, I know the sun sessions is from the 70's...even so..its an essential to rock n roll.

Sure Elvis had some filler, but who didnt? Even the Beatles had some fillers..

Back then a "record" was a single with a B-side..
So they technically should just list "Thats all right"..
Or just about any of his singles from 56
