Would anyone reccommend a portable dvd player?
Okay, here is the deal, I currenty work an overnight job and there is a lot of downtime at times. Having a portable dvd player would be sweet for that but im not sure if i would be using it for much else...for anyone that has one, do you find yourself using it often?
Also, I was looking at a price around $275..I know ebay has some good deals, but would you reccommend something for that price? Thanks!

There were a couple recent threads on portables. I recently got the Polaroid with a 7" screen for $250. Works well but the volume is a little low in the car, I got an RF transmitter to compensate. I travel on business so it's fun to be able watch in the hotel room.

I'd like to get one too, maybe spend a little less than that. I ride the train 40 minutes to and from work each day and was thinking I could really get caught up on some viewing during the commute. Any more reasonably priced recommendations?

Earlier this summer I got the Audiovox Eddie Bauer edition for around $280 at Target. Very nice 8" screen, all audio and video cables, 3hr. battery and car adapter. I primarily bought it for long car trips (needed when you have 3 kids). I also got a Sony cassette adapter (other brands had a hiss). Needless to say, it sounds great on my 8 speaker system and keeps the kids from asking "Are we there yet???".
I've used it during my lunch time at work (this is how I got to watch all of 24:Season 1) and the occasional train ride. Plus, it's also a great for listening to commentaries while stuck in traffic.
Hope that helps.
I don't think you can go wrong.

I got one of the Initial (walmart). Its fine and cheap. It plays all formats including computer jpegs on cd (even shows file structure of computer disks.
The volume is a bit low on it also. I found high efficiency headphones and now no problem. The battery life is ~2.5 hours and I got a second one for $40 (but in Hong Kong).
Many of these entry level ones are more alike then different. If they are not from the same factory many of the sub assy's are.

I picked this up recently. After a rebate it was $249.99.

Nice unit, transport is noisy starting up or searching chapters. Picture quality is decent.
It has a remote, two hour battery pack and all the necessary cables for charging or using in a car.

Any more recommendations? I'm looking fo r one that is preferably small/light (7" screen or less) and has a *good* battery--at least 3 hrs. I would sacrifice screen size for portability. (Don't want to lug the laptop around for movies!)

I have the Polaroid one from Best Buy. Forgot the model number though. I didn't think I'll use it that much, but it's great for going on business trips or even visiting relatives. It's nice to be able to pop in a movie late at nite in your bedroom to watch before going to sleep.
The best thing about this Polaroid is that you can enable it to be region-free. Do a search for "Polaroid" and you'll find my other thread on it.

I just picked this same one up this weekend, $251, and I definitely like it so far. The picture is darn good, the sound is excellent w/headphones and fine without. Unfortunately the buttons on the machine itself are somewhat lacking, and I don't REALLY want to carry the remote to use while watching it on a train, but oh well. For the price it seems very good. I don't plan to use it to watch Lord of the Rings or Saving Private Ryan, but I have some serious 24 and NYPD Blue to catch up on and it's perfect for that.
