AFI's 100 Heroes and Villains

They're gonna pick-um, lets pick ours. I know this has been done before but it can be fun. I know who I'd pick, but I'm genuinely curious who their pole will pick as #1

They'll probably pick Norman Bates or the Shark from Jaws

The American Film Institute has announced plans to present AFI's 100 Years ... 100 Heroes & Villains, hosted by Arnold Schwarzenegger, to air on CBS June 3rd. The "heroes and villains" featured in the program were selected last year in a vote of 1,500 filmmakers, critics and historians. The voters were provided definitions of "hero" ("... prevails in extreme circumstances ... to show humanity at its best") and villain ("...horribly evil or grandiosely funny, but are ultimately tragic") and given the names of 400 characters from which to choose going back in time to The Vampire in the 1915 film A Fool There Was.
So what's your pick, and who do you think they'll pick?

No villain list would be complete without Harry Lime.

Good Lord, not another bloody AFI list. I'm convinced they only compile them because they love getting spit upon by critics.

Someone's going to say that they're good because they encourage discussion and debate... but people already discuss and debate this subject all the time, and an "end-all, be-all" list is hardly going to matter.

I would now like to pre-emptively point out, before everyone inevitabley does, that "the list is unfair"," they left off soooo many more deserving candidates", "_____ is hardly a good villain/hero", and "WHERE'S JASON? OMG LOL".

No, they do it in conjunction w/ the movie rental/sales places to spur people to watch/buy catalogue films. That's why you always see a cross promotion at the video store where they put out the top 100 on its own little shelf.

The TV specials are 2 hour infomercials for movies

I like to refer to King Kong as the doomed misunderstood protagonist - poor guy, locked up behind a fence, given a lovely lady, taken off his island, and whisked off to a scary metropolitan city, s*** I'd be p'od too.

Villainy has never been as iconic as Darth Vader so, IMO, there is no contest. The hero issue is trickier, though--Indiana Jones is a great choice, but he's also got some very human faults, so if the AFI goes pollyanish with its votes, he may not make the #1 spot...

Wait a minute...I just realized, I'm sure they're not going to haphazardly rank heroes and villains in a willy-nilly mish-mash--they're going to rank hero/villain combos; ergo, if Darth Vader ranks as #1, Luke Skywalker will default with him as #1 hero. Of course, this may mean that Indy might not rank at all, since he was never plagued by a constant villain...

King Kong was just misunderstood.

I don't remember if The Third Man was considered American or not. It is a requirement, but loosely interpreted. Did it make the other lists?

Vader is a good choice for villain.

Should have lots of Disney characters as well. Wicked Withces and such.

Rudy for hero.

Wait, you need a hero and a villain together? That's no good.

Warden Norton / Andy Dufresne (1994 The Shawshank Redemption)
Dr. Evil / Austin Powers (1994 Austin Powers)

That's all I can come up with right now. I struggled to come up with just 50, so it will be interesting to see the whole list of 100.
